What's wrong with my power supply?

Thu Feb 21, 2013 6:09 pm

I bought a "Micro-USB 5V 1200mA power supply for Raspberry Pi", but I get that "keys getting stuck" problem.
What's wrong with this one? I thought 1200 mA were way more than required.

the keyboard is like pulling more then 120ma (or was it 140ma) try an different keyboard, do you have any thing els plugged into the USB ports as well

the keyboard i am using now gets stuck pressing down when i tap it (its the Only key that does it for some reason its only an minor annoyance so i have ignored it for the time)

make sure to test the voltage between tp1 and tp2 (make sure your getting above 4.8v, ideal voltage is 5v but can work at 4.75v as well)

There's nothing else plugged in. I tried a Microsoft Arc Keyboard and a QPAD MK-85 (disabled lighting). Those are all I have because I kind of expected the device to be able to handle at least a keyboard.
I don't have any equipment to test voltages.

Possibly nothing is wrong with your power supply. The problems with sticking mouse and keyboard entries has received quite a bit of coverage on the various forums and all the 'possible' solutions seem to involve buying something additional. Direct-wired USB keyboards seems to work perfectly for many Using a powered hub to drive a wireless USB keyboard is a fairly common suggestion, the Pi doesn't have enough guts to drive some keyboard USB dongles unaided. No single 'solution' seems to fit all cases, I'm afraid.

If you have an older model Pi tht has the polyfuses in the USB outputs, then this can cause the issue if the keyboard draws too much current. I have one of those so I just soldered wires across the polyfuses to eliminate the current restrictions. I now run an unpowered 4-port USB hub with a keyboard, mouse, wifi, and occasionally a USB webcam - all with no problems. Of course I also soldered a glass fuse across the power input polyfuse to eliminate that as a potential issue.

I just received the USB hub with power supply. Didn't change anything at all. So let me guess. Now you want me to buy the cheapest, smallest, wired USB keyboard I can find, right?

I invested 100€ in this thing and I can't even login. Is this whole project a practical joke? Like, "Hey, let's make a ultra cheap computer but then make it mandatory to buy so much extra stuff for it that you could as might as well have bought a way more powerful used PC in the first place".

It's that 512 MB Rev B. thing by the way.

If you tried different solutions and feel that the Pi is faulty RMA the Pi.

A keyboard. And now the hub in between. And a HDMI cable and power supply, obviously. And a SD card.

The power plug of the power supply for the raspberry pi is connected with a socket.
The Micro-B plug of power supply is connected with the Micro-B female of the raspberry pi.
One end of the HDMI cable is connected to the HDMI female connector of the raspberry pi.
The other end of the HDMI cable is connected to the HDMI female connector (the one labeled "HDMI 1", not "HDMI 2") of my BenQ XL2420T monitor (the one to my left to be exact).
The power plug of the USB hub power supply is connected with another socket.
The other end of the power supply cable, whatever that thing is called, is connected with the USB hub power connector.
The USB Type B end of the USB cable is connected to the USB hub.
The USB Type A end of the cable is connected to the lower USB Type A female connector of the raspberry pi.
The USB receiver of the Ark Keyboard/USB Type A connector of the MK-85 is connected to the rightmost USB Type A female connector of the USB hub.
The microSD card is put face up, with the contacts facing left, into the SD card adapter.
The SD card adapter is put face down, with the contacts facing left, into the SD slot of the raspberry pi.

Is everything correct? I assume I didn't squeeze the USB hub into the ethernet port.

Wrong! The persons responding to your pleas for help in this forum don't particularly 'want' you to do 'anything'. Of course, if you wish to avail yourself of any of the advice they freely give, choose for yourself what advice you freely wish to accept, act on it, and report back, preferably avoiding throwing your toys out of your pram in the process..
