Internet through electrical outlets

I was talking to one of my friends about electronics and he mentions that somthing about internet through the elctrical outlet, I was blow away that this was possible (very logical that it could be done) however he had to get to class. I was wondering if there is an adapter ($50 or less) that would let me do this? I was also wonder if it would I would need to more then one to use it in my whole house. As you can see I am an "EXPERT" with eletricty and need all the help i can get!

There is a device you can plug into main sockets which acts as an ethernet cable. I guess this is what your friend is referring to, e.g. http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/netgear-x ... 6-pdt.html

In the UK I've seen complaints from radio hams as they seem to spray radio noise.

I use one myself for my pi's internet, as my room in my student house is as far away from the router as possible. Looking into adapting one to behave as a power outlet too
Also been looking at the possibility of USB data over power line, but a simple NAS would probably be easier lol
