Pen Drive Woes

Sat Feb 09, 2013 10:25 pm

So, I plug a 32Gb pen drive into my Wheezy...
It "usefully" asks if it should open it. "Y"
If shows me a whole load of stuff not on the pen drive.
I search. I cannot locate the stuff on the pen drive. I give up.

Later...
I plug the 32Gb drive into my Windows XP machine. It reports my pen drive is 59Mb in capacity!!!
The 59 Mb is full of Wheezy data.
I plug the pen drive into my Linux laptop (Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS)
It reports 2 partitions. One of 59Mb. One of 1.9Gb.
These seem to contain the Wheezy operating system. There's no sign of the other 30Gb.

1. Why has my Raspberry done this and how do I stop it EVER doing it again?
2. Any tips on recovering my "lost" data?
3. Any tips on recovering my effectively lost 32GB pen drive?

Did you have the pen drive plugged in to your PC when you wrote the Wheezy OS to an SD card?

It is just too much of a coincidence that what you are seeing on the pendrive is exactly what would be expected if you had written the OS to the pendrive.

The data on the first 2 Gbyte of the pendrive is gone forever. The rest is very likely still there. The usual recovery methods may be able to find the files in that part.

parted (or gparted) on a Linux PC should be able to delete the partitions and make a new FAT32 one occupying the whole drive.

Try http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/ first and check your flash drive structure.
If it contains an ext3 partition with Raspbian then you've effectively screw the first 2GB of the drive.

For partition / file recovery TestDisk is highly recommended - http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

Don't believe the pen drive wasn't in the computer when I wrote the O/S. That was written to a SD card. Shall try the tips for locating my "lost" data. Thanks for the pointers.

Whoops! For "wasn't" read "was".
Just downloaded and tried Testdisk on XP. It found just the 59Mb partition. I'll try it on the Linux.

Thanks very much RichardS (and others!). I've recovered the data with the "Linux reader". Just need to reformat the drive and, hopefully, all will be well. Still not sure what happened but will assume I must have written the o/s to the pendrive as well as the sd card somehow.
