Simulator & emulator downloads

My prior posts with download resources have been scuppered by the limits on public DropBoxes. See:

You can now get them from:

Please use the torrents if you can. Go up a level for the official Debian6 release + torrent.

No download limits but not a particularly fast connection.

Further changes now that the files are somewhere else:

To emulate using the official Debian image:

Get the bundle:
wget http://rpi.descartes.co.uk/sim-emu/debian6.tar.gz

Unpack it:
tar -zxvf debian6.tar.gz

Go inside:
cd debian6

Launch it:
./launchDebian6




The getDebian script in the VirtualBox & VMware simulators look to DropBox. This was my best guess Debian package which is rather obsoleted with the official Debian image but if you want it you will have to:

wget http://rpi.descartes.co.uk/sim-emu/debian.tar.gz
then unpack with
tar -zxvf debian.tar.gz
change directory with
cd debian
and launch with
./launchDebian

And, based on a few posts/pm's, a quick reminder:

The VMware/VirtualBox bit has user/password of rpi/password.

The guess Debian emulator package has user/password of rpi/password.

If you download the Debian6 package, a repackage of the official Debian image, then you need to use the login details from there - user/password of pi/suse.

Sorry to post another username password question but pi/suse isn't getting me into the emulated device. I've read all these posts and am now a little confused.

hi I have tried all 5 combinations of passwords to try to login in with the wm version but still I am unable to log in user/password ,pi/suse ,rpi /password,user/password,root passoword  the image version is

To get in to the VMWare image:

User name of rpi

Password of password

FYI, the user/password is shorthand, as in:

"The user/password is rpi/password"

I have the Debian package running under qemu, terminal mode only.

Is there any way to run the gui under qemu, and if there is - do you have a link to instructions?

I would really like to exercise the gui before getting the device...

If I recall you just type startx to load it, if it is the Debian Squeeze package you are talking about.

Thanks for your quick answer .. it wasn't a password problem it was with the desktop option .. I had kde and or default option on  which was causing the problem ..instead of

lxde or openbox session..

Fun day I had... My Debian Squeeze was bare, so I followed nmcc's writeup and installed lxde and all the other bits. What I did not realize - Debian sets /tmp up as 7666, which breaks normal users from logging in and lxde refuses to log in root - and none of the failsafes work. Finally got past that, and my Arm virtual machine looks great running with lxde. I should be up to speed by the time my Pi gets here. Thanks Nmcc for your writeups!

I have a problem running this emulator.

I downloaded Vbox version. This runs fine. Then I run the script getDebian and it downloaded and unpacked.

When I run launchDebian i get some oss errors and it stops at the line saying


VNC server running on ...

Just take the next step in the instructions - launch a vnc viewer, connect to localhost and all will be revealed

I also compile and installed Qemu 1.0.1 on Ubuntu 11.04 and debian6 runs well. The standard package in Ubuntu is 0.15 which does not have the required CPU.

Is there any way to change the screen resolution to something higher than 640x480? I'm not familiar with Qemu.

Where did you get the kernel? Did you compile it yourself, or did you get it from somewhere else?

You should be able to get 800x600 by creating in the pi image an /etc/X11/xorg.conf as follows:

SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
EndSection#################################### AFAIK, 800x600 is as good as it gets.

Thanks for the image - just a quick note for others if you copy the VMWare image you need to remove the MAC address cache:
