Re: Acceptable SD Card

Mon Feb 20, 2012 12:33 am

I have looked at the page http://elinux.org/RPi_Verified.....eripherals to see the short list of acceptable or tested SD cards. If I don't have one of these or can buy one locally, what are the key parameters that I should use to purchase a SD card. For instances: must be Class 4 or maybe it can be Class 4 or 6?

I assume that Brand doesn't matter and it can be anything from 2GB to 32GB?

Thanks, John

John, that bit of the wiki is, I believe, an artefact of its origins. At the moment we are all guessing, certainly a 2G or 4G class 4 should be cheap and low risk. Personally I think larger and faster are likely to be fine but until real production pi hit the streets we are just guessing.

Search for the Class 10 thread for more thoughts

I agree with dukla2000 most of the cards on the list seem to be conjecture rather than true life trial, The class 10 issue seems to be a Linux kernel issue rather than a card issue.

I would suggest 8Gb or less for starters and class 6 or less for speed just to be safe.

(8Gb is a lot in Linux Unless you load games) and for media I intend to use a external USB drive( the current image for download is 1.7Gb)

There are about 75 Raspi's out there all in model B configuration, at present and I do not think any of them are proofing SD cards as usable since there is way to much for them to do as far as development.

50 Alpha's Some of these are being used by the foundation for display Etc.

20 or 25 Beta's Not sure how many went to development.

10 Beta's were auctioned

1 auctioned beta, for sure went into a museum Etc. LOL

All of the cards I have work in my Linux boxes and the only exception is that I have not tried my class 10 8Gb PNY card in one as yet.
If you are more worried about ,spelling, punctuation or grammar you have probably already missed the point so please just move on.

I have read a bunch of these topics and it seems there is no clear Answer and they all go no where, If I understand correctly there will be a card available that you can purchase when the RPI is ready to sell, maybe the folks making the cards could give some insight to what cards they are using and the process that they are using?

Right now the only verified cards are on the list you already linked.  As you can imagine, there are precious few boards out there right now so the number of tested items is rather diminutive.  I know that Class 10 cards have a linux issue (not a r-pi issue, but an actually across the board linux hiccup) from time to time, but any class 4 or 6 cards *should* play nice.

As for an SD card be available when you purchase the r-pi.  That's something that is in the works, but last I heard was not going to be immediately available at launch.  My guess is that the RPF noticed that so much of the people showing interest where more the developmental/hacker side of things that they decided to put that on the back burner since most of us would already have and choose to use our own SD card than purchase one from the RPF

I'm closing this thread as it's a duplicate of a duplicate of a well you get the idea   Please be sure to use the search feature of the forum when asking questions, the custom search on the front page is *amazing* I use it almost exclusively now
