problem transferring files from samba server pi

I am having problems copying files from a raspberry pi used as a samba server.

File transfers start normally but the speed goes down until it stops completely after 5-6 seconds. I have tested windows and linux clients and I have also tested Raspbian, Arch and Openelec, but the problem persists.

Copying to the server works - although it's slow (2MB/s), but the transfer completes successfully. And everything else seems to work.

Any ideas?
