Prepare SD card on Windows 7

Fri Jan 25, 2013 3:24 pm

Hello folks,
i'm preparing sd card for my raspberry pi.
i'm just working with this img file 2012-12-16-wheezy-raspbian.img on windows 7.
Following win32diskimager's istructions, everytime that try to write on sd memory there is an exception: "An error occured when attempting to write data from handle. Error 1359: an internal error occurred."
i followed also this guide: http://elinux.org/RPi_Easy_SD_Card_Setup with flashnul...but was unsuccessful.

why?
thanks in advance,

Marco

Hmm... two thoughts, the first is are you certain you don't have the SD card locked? (Thereby making it read-only)

The second is you might want to try re-downloading win32disk as it might have had an error when you downloaded it initially.

I'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing here. Just to be sure we're on the same page, I'm not referring to software rights in the OS to create, edit, or delete files. If you lay the sd card face up (pins down) such that the angled corner is on the right hand side, on the left side there should be a little piece of plastic (usually white or yellow in color) and (typically, but not always) the word "lock". If the plastic piece is in the position towards the "back" of the card (that is away from the pins) then it is locked and will not allow you to write data to the card. If it is pushed up towards the pins you will be able to write to the card. Sometimes it looks like it is in the correct position but isn't. Try moving it to the "locked" position and then back to the "unlocked" position :-)

If that is not the issue, some people have found that it is first necessary to delete all partitions of an SD card and only have one single FAT32 partition on there before they start. While the built in windows format typically did the trick some people had to use SDCardFormater

The other option is to use the Fedora ARM Installer.

It appears to annoy some elements of the Fedora community for some reason. So I use it to write all my Debian based images

The easiest way is to create a Live Lubuntu DVD and boot of that and undertake the creation of a card, rather than use Windoze

Lubuntu has a ImageWriter Software in the repository....
I will always assume you are running Raspbian for desktop and Raspbmc for XMBC !

Some forum users have reported that using the built-in SD card slot on their PC has been a source of problems. The workaround is apparently to use a separate plug-in USB SD card reader. Maybe worth a try if this applies to you?
