HDMI cutting out when running something

Thu Jan 24, 2013 8:18 pm

Hello all,

I have been trying to set up my Raspberry Pi this evening and have been running into some problems with the display.

I am using HDMI and have changed the config file appropriately to allow correct output but when I boot up into the GUI and go to use any application the display cuts out and just shows "no signal" on the TV.

I have a power light on red and no other lights (not even any faint green) and really have no idea what is going on here. I have tried searching Google and this forum but haven't found anything.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The first thing to check is the power supply. That causes more problems than anything else. If you have a voltmeter, check the voltage from TP1 to TP2 when you are having this problem. Anything below 4.75 volts is out of spec. A quick test might be to hook up the composite video instead of the HDMI. You can only use one or the other but I think that the HDMI draws more current. If the composite video works when you run your apps, then I would still suspect the power supply first.

Have you tried config_hdmi_boost=4 in config.txt ?

Thanks for your suggestions.

I have tried a few things and I am still having this issue. Here's a summary of what I've tried:

- Tried power at 1000mah, 1200mah and 2000mah. I'm currently using 2000mah.
- Tried the HDMI boost.
- I plugged in a friends pi and that worked with no problems.
- I tried my friends SD card in my pi and although he is using a different version of OS it worked without fail.
- I tried using my SD card in my friends pi and it worked without any problems.
- I then again tried my SD card in my pi and it seemed to work enough for me to open a few applications but then cut out a little later than it usually does, and it's back to misbehaving again.

One thing I have noticed is instead of showing a "no signal" message on the TV it is now showing a "unsupported signal" message. I think this happened after I uncommented the HDMI boost element in the config file.

I'm struggling to understand what is going on. I can't imagine that there's an incompatibility between the Raspbian OS and the version of Raspberry pi I have.

Any more ideas?

Well it appears that all images in my pi do eventually cut out.

I tried my friends SD again and it eventually cut out after 10 minutes.

I also tried seeing if it was applications that was causing the cut out, and it just seems to happen at around 2-3 minutes for my SD and pi - doesn't matter if I'm in console or desktop.

It seems to be that after it's happened, I have to leave it a minute or so before I turn it on again otherwise it won't boot anything.

I have a suspicion that I have some faulty hardware here... Would you agree?

This looks suspiciously like power - F3 (the input poly-fuse) or the power lead.
Go with the advice of Mobius

You've now found all the images exhibit the problem, and so does your friend's SD card, so this rules out those.
But does your friend's Pi exhibit the problem when you use it with your power supply and power lead? If so try a different lead.
If not, then I'd suspect F3

And buy a multimeter. Every home should have one.
