segfault on everything???

Thu Jan 24, 2013 8:00 pm

So I went to update my rpi, and I get the following mess toward the end:

Code: Select all

Preparing to replace debconf 1.5.46 (using .../debconf_1.5.49_all.deb) ...
Segmentation fault
dpkg: warning: subprocess old pre-removal script returned error exit status 139
dpkg: trying script from the new package instead ...
Segmentation fault
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/debconf_1.5.49_all.deb (--unpack):
subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 139
/var/lib/dpkg/info/debconf.postinst: 13: /var/lib/dpkg/info/debconf.postinst: Syntax error: "(" unexpected (expecting "fi")
dpkg: error while cleaning up:
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2
Errors were encountered while processing:
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
Now whenever I run an executable, it segfaults. What's up with that?

Ok, something is seriously wrong there :(

Any chance you could post the full output, as I suspect the real error message was shown earlier on - but you've probably not got that anymore.

It's quite likely you've got a corrupted SD card now. It would be a good idea to reload it with the latest image of whichever OS (was it Raspbian?) you had installed and start from the beginning again.

Just one thought.. did you install any software from anywhere other than the Raspbian repository? Or change your /etc/apt/sources.list file at all? Installing software from the Debian armhf set will cause problems like this, as it isn't compatible with the Pi's CPU.

Sure enough, it's a corrupted SD card. I restarted and fsck started freaking out.
