Wifi dongle (WNA3100M) installation

Sat Jan 19, 2013 7:37 pm

So I've read forums and blogs for a whole day now, and I can't figure out how to get this usb wifi adapter to work...

My Raspberry is the B version, I dowloaded Raspbian yesterday, so my uname -a gives me:

Code: Select all

Linux raspberrypi 3.2.27+ #250 PREEMPT Thu Oct 18 19:03:02 BST 2012 armv6l GNU/Linux
If i do iwconfig, I get

Code: Select all

$ iwconfig
lo        no wireless extensions.
eth0      no wireless extensions.
More info on the wifi dongle itself, with lsusb:

Code: Select all

Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0846:f001 NetGear, Inc
And with dmesg:

Code: Select all

[    3.725079] usb 1-1.2.1: New USB device found, idVendor=0846, idProduct=f001
[    3.734707] usb 1-1.2.1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[    3.746905] usb 1-1.2.1: Product: NETGEAR WNA3100M
[    3.754184] usb 1-1.2.1: Manufacturer: Realtek
[    3.760964] usb 1-1.2.1: SerialNumber: ***
After all these hours, I am quite convinced that the driver is the rtl8192cu
So I tried downloading it from several links (forums, etc.), copying the 8192cu.ko file in /lib/modules/3.2.27+/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ and running:

Code: Select all

$ sudo insmod /lib/modules/3.2.27+/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/8192cu.ko
Error: could not insert module /lib/modules/3.2.27+/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/8192cu.ko: Invalid module format
So I read I need to build it myself, so I followed this guide : http://www.strapp.co.uk/downloads/BuildModule.txt by replacing 3.1.9+ by 3.2.27+ but it is not working yet...

Please guys, what did I do wrong? What should I try?
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

hello
without installing anything (using a raspberry pi version B + raspbian wheezy) and after using apt-get update/upgrade, i have just followed these steps
http://databoyz.wordpress.com/tag/how-t ... pberry-pi/
and then everything is working out of the box

in the case that the blog page is not available anymore, here is the process to follow :

1/3 edit the file

Code: Select all

/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
2/3 replace

Code: Select all

ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1
with

Code: Select all

ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1

network={
        ssid="your_ssid"
        scan_ssid=1
        psk="your_password"
        proto=RSN
        key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
        pairwise=CCMP
        auth_alg=OPEN
}
3/3 reboot your Raspberry Pi

knowing that :
ssid: your wifi name
scan_ssid: value of 1 means broadcast and value of 2 means hidden (suggest you enter value of 1)
psk: your wifi password
proto: your choice of RSN or WPA. RSN is WP2 and WPA is WPA1. (most config is RSN)
key_mgmt: your choice of WPA-PSK or WPA-EAP (pre-shared or enterprise respectively)
pairwise: your choice of CCMP or TKIP ( WPA2 or WPA1 respectively)
auth_alg: OPEN option is required for WPA and WPA2 (other option, SHARED & LEAP)
