The Lone Raspberry Project

Sun Jan 13, 2013 12:30 pm

I am proposing a project I am naming "The Lone Raspberry Project" I have created the proposal in the wiki here http://elinux.org/The_Lone_Raspberry_Project so that it can be edited without resulting in a rambling thread.

I am not excluding the "Bare Metal" and other groups all I ask is they prepare their own CD that contains all of the software required within the remit of the proposal. ;)

I would personally desire a "Bare Metal" add on ;)

Any more suggestions if you are phobic about adding to the wiki post here. ;)

I assume that you are proposing a Pi configuation, not a different HW release. I guess I'm not sure why the specification of both a 4GB SD card and a flash drive for programs. If the bulk of the SW is to reside on the flash drive, then a smaller SD card would make sense. I'm doing all of my learning using a 2GB SD card and the standard Raspbian image. That way I can periodically save off the updated image knowing that I can always expand it to a larger card later. Or, more likely at this point, recover my most recently working image. Interestingly, SD cards of supposedly the same size and same manufacturer are not always the same size. I have an older Sandisk card that is too small to accept the image from my newer Sandisk card even though they are both labeled as 2GB. I've seen this issue in hard drives (different LBA number) but I didn't know it also affected flash devices.

Reasonable question.

Yes I am not proposing a different hardware release just a support structure.

As I originaly thought about the project I considered how could we could supply the support structure, I originaly thought about a set of CD's but I then thought about a situation where a user did not have a second non RPi computer. When I thought about this we could not guarantee CD rom and therefore the data would need to be in medium that could be accessed from the RPi it self.

Of the projects I have been studying is the building of a web server running Joomla! If the student is to build this without internet support I am not shure it will fit on a SD smaller than 4Gig this is part of the research.

As I have said on the wiki nothing is set in stone. ;)
