If you are referring to Raspberry Pi Operating System please undertake ALL steps to upgrade as referenced in Blog:

I found I had to run alsamixer (from a shell prompt) and increase the volume of the outputs - for some reason the analogue output was almost at zero. I've seen a few references to this on this forum since the change to pulseaudio.

I found sound output had switched from the 3.5mm socket to HDMI. Raspi-config was my reversion friend.

Unfortunately, I lost the sound from my Raspberry Pi 4 through the speakers built into the monitor too undepend on HDMI1 or HDMI2. I followed all the update recommendations that I found here and on other forums last week, but the sound is only on the headphone jack. Moreover, on the first day, when I lost sound, fixing the config (hdmi_drive=2) file helped me, but the next day the sound disappeared again. I also noticed that there is always noise in the headphones, even if I turn them off through the audio output channel settings.

Thanks to all who replied.

So I did the full-upgrade and switched over to pulse audio as described here...

All good here again!

I again repeated all the recommendations for correcting the error (although I am not an expert yet). Every time I rebooted after changing the settings. As a result, the sound appeared again after removing the PulseAudio:
$ sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio
$ sudo apt-get autoremove
reboot
And now i have the sound through HDMI in my monitor again!

Didn't have time to post this before but...
I spoke too soon, the audio is in fact broken with no HDMI.

Have you checked the output volume in alsamixer?

This is what I had to do too. I updated this morning and HDMI audio to my monitor went away. I tried the config.txt fixes, manually downloading the PulseAudio control - nothing worked. Note, unlike others, I *did* have analog audio out the headphone jack.

PulseAudio may be the future, but I don't think it is quite ready for prime time yet.

I met the same issue.

I'm using raspberry pi OS with GUI. The audio devices are available in the speaker menu on upper right of the screen. But those devices will be lost if I do "apt upgrade".

My version is this:

$ uname -a
Linux raspberrypi 5.10.11-v7l+ #1399 SMP Thu Jan 28 12:09:48 GMT 2021 armv7l GNU/Linux
