display stuck at 640X480

i am useing a hdmi to dvi converter and it boots at 640X480. when i go to monitor settings it says "unable to get monitor information. help!!

Something is often lost in the hdmi/dvi conversion... You should be able to force the resolution in config.txt http://elinux.org/RPi_config.txt
