Netis WF-2111 802.11n 150Mbps Wireless N USB Adapter

Hey guys, I picked up one of these the other day really cheep (4.75 USD) (frys electronics) and works right out of the box on the pi. a lsusb shows its a Realtek RTL8188CUS chip set. I thought it was a great deal at that price.

Here is more info on the adapter.

There shouldn't be any problems getting this type of wifi module to work. You just need to configure the connection to your network correctly.

To configure the connection do not edit file /etc/network/interfaces. Edit file /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf and set it up like

Code: Select all

country=GB
ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1

network={
        ssid="network-name"
        psk="network-password"
}
Set up country=GB to the country you are in and set the network name and password and this should be sufficient to get it working.

MrEngman,

Thanks for answer.
I made the modification as you indicated in the wpa_supplicant.conf, i replaced GB with RO couse im from Romania and filled the right info for ssid and psk accordindg to my network.

The /etc/network/interfaces was already modified from the beginning, meaning that i have a static IP allocated to my Rpi and it was configured to work with utp cable but i tried to modify it to work with the Netis adapter and now i dont know what is ok or wrong in it.
The /etc/network/interfaces looks like this:

Code: Select all

auto lo

iface lo inet loopbak
allow-hot plug wlan0
auto wlan0

iface eth inet static
address 192.168.1.110
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1
If i use ifconfig i dont see any tx or rx bytes transfer in the wlan0 section (the utp cable is unpluged).

Thanks!

i tested the Netis adapter on windows and it works so the device is ok.
on the wpa_gui when i press "scan" i cant see any network!

what could be wrong?

thanks.

Try command sudo iwlist wlan0 scan instead.

Is your OS raspbian wheezy or jessie? Command cat /etc/os-release will show if it is wheezy or jessie.

I have Linux 7 Wheezy installed.
When i scan with iwlist wlan scan this is what i get:

OK, so it shows the wifi is working but it is better to use sudo iwlist wlan0 scan. Without sudo it uses a stored version of an old scan. Using sudo makes it do a new scan.

I think you just need to set the configuration correctly to get it to work. Looking at the /etc/network/interfaces file data you posted earlier there are several problems with it which is why it probably does not work. I have used the following with wheezy to get a static IP on eth0 and wlan0

Code: Select all

auto lo

iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.xx
gateway 192.168.1.yy
netmask 255.255.255.0

allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet static
address 192.168.1.xx
gateway 192.168.1.yy
netmask 255.255.255.0
wpa-ssid "network-name"
wpa-psk "network-password"
You will need to set the address and gateway addresses to suit your network.

I think we're getting closer!
After reboot I see the little green led on the adapter for the first time flashing :) but! unfortunately still not working.
What do you say about this? What can I do forward?
On ifconfig I see under wlan section that rx bytes: 50572 and on tx bytes: 716
Any advice?
Thanks!

The output from ifconfig shows the wifi has received and sent data so it has been transferring data from/to your AP. If it is now disconnected then this could be a power supply issue or power management issue.

Make sure you use a power supply that can provide enough current. I would suggest at least 2.0A although more would be better. Also ensure the cable connecting the power supply to the Pi is good quality. If the cable is too thin, too long or bad quality it can cause problems when the current is high by dropping the voltage to the Pi too much and can cause the wifi to fail.

One thing that might help is to make the file that disables power management. Create file /etc/modprobe.d/8192cu.conf as an example using command

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/8192cu.conf
and add the single line

Code: Select all

options 8192cu rtw_power_mgnt=0 rtw_enusbss=0
.

Thanks for the fast reply.
I made the file /etc/modprobed/8192cu.conf and copied the line you gave me. How can I see the power management?

The power supply its 5v - 2A from Stontronics LTD and it was bought together with the Rpi.

In the Rpi i have connected also a zwave stick gen 5 from Aeotec Aeon labs, could be any problem because of this?

Thanks!

To get the power management parameters set correctly you will need to reboot the Pi after making the file /etc/modprobe.d/8192cu.conf.

You can see the power management parameters using commands

Code: Select all

[email protected] ~ $ cat /etc/modprobe.d/8192cu.conf
options 8192cu rtw_power_mgnt=0 rtw_enusbss=0

[email protected] ~ $ cat /sys/module/8192cu/parameters/rtw_power_mgnt
0
[email protected] ~ $ cat /sys/module/8192cu/parameters/rtw_enusbss
0
The parameters will show zero (0) when the power management is turned off.

I don't know what the zwave stick gen 5 is used for but if you can try your Pi without the zwave stick gen 5 connected and see how the wifi behaves then that might show if it is causing any problems. I think with earlier versions of the Pi there are some limits to the current that can be used by USB devices so removing any USB devices may help get the wifi working.

I don't have a Netis WF-2111 but I have other wifi modules that use the same driver and do not have any problems with them so I don't see why the WF-2111 should not work OK as well. Normally I only have the wifi connected to the USB and do not have any other USB devices connected to my Pis.

Hi,
It seems that it wasn't a problem about power consumtion on usb ports!
I found another config for the wpa_supplicant.conf and now its working perfectly ;)
For those who face same issue like me, here is how i have solved the /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf:

Code: Select all

country=RO
ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1

network={
ssid="your_wifi_network"
psk="your_wifi_password"
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
}
and the /etc/network/interface should look like this:

Code: Select all

auto lo

iface lo inet loopback

auto wlan0

allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet static
address 192.168.1xxx <<your IP address>>
gateway 192.168.1.x <<your gateway (router address)>>
netmask 255.255.255.x <<your netmask>>
wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
wpa-ssid "name_of_your_wifi_network"
wpa-psk "password_of_your_wifi_network"
and that should do it! :P

I would like to thank MrEngman for the help and i would like to ask one last question:
How to turn on the power management?
Executing this commands i get this answers:

cat /etc/modprobe.d/8192cu.conf answer options 8192cu rtw_power_mgnt=0 rtw_enusbss=0
cat /sys/module/8192cu/parameters/rtw_power_mgnt answer 0
cat /sys/module/8192cu/parameters/rtw_enusbss answer 0

Many thanks!

Heads up: this adapter is on sale for *LESS THAN FREE* (after a mail-in rebate) today and tomorrow on Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6833389023

I got two (the limit) and my total came to $9.02.
If I send in two mail-in rebates (limit is 5), that's $10 off.
After $0.47 per stamp for the two rebates, it looks like I'm going to net 4 cents on this deal!
