WLAN without X

Sun Jan 06, 2013 3:28 pm

I'm sure this question is answered somewhere, but I can't find it. I try to configure the WLAN interface without startx. Trying this don't work for some reason I don't understand. When I configure the WLAN thorough wap_gui all works fine. Doing the same like the GUI does in /etc/network/ interfaces without the GUI does not work. What does the GUI do what I forgot?

I had the same issue and thats why I wrote up the case study here http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... 26&t=28339 the odd thing is once its done the command line login works, you only need to do it that first time. ;)

WICD http://wicd.sourceforge.net

If not installed then:
apt-get wcid

Wow talk about finding new ways to frighten and baffle Noobs!

That Wicd Launch pad page is wild. ;)

The page says wicd if you follow the link and your saying apt-get wcid. ;) Note the ci trasposition.

Rather than FLAMING could you make a justifiable response which is helpful and beneficial to the OP if you feel I am frightening newbies ?

If you are not happy with the response I made report it to the Moderators..

Chill out people. I'm not seeing any flaming here, but them I'm not seeing much help either. The recommendations need a little more detail, as do the refutations.

Sorry jamesh & Cloudcentric

I was just trying to flag up that Noobs frighten easily and that just dropping a link to a busy and complicated page of the type demonstrated needs supporting text and explanation.

Also there was a typo of the type thats going to bounce for Noobs.

Also that noobs don't know if they will need network manager.

It's clear that Cloudcentric is not a Noob we want noob's to find solace here.

Nobody is flaming this whole exchange should be treated as a heads up to try and make this a Noob friendly place.

If you drop a link to a page then you need to check the page for the Noobs that are going to follow your link.

If the link is to a noob oriented page no problem. If it's then going to posibly break something then either reasure them they can undo by re-flashing their SD card or uninstalling.

This is a site rife with Noobs who got their RPi's from Santa and they are going on the long journey to geekdom if your providing help you need to hand hold remember you too were once a Noob try to remember what it was like.

I am sorry if you thought I was atacking you it was not my intent. ;)

What a load of self-opiniated waffle, what gives you a right to question my postings, that is the job of the Moderators.

Jamesh I still feel that response was not called for and if I am unhelpful, then will quietly shut the exit door on the way out..

Usually under Raspbian the Network Administration is handled by 'Network Manager' Ethernet and the ' WPA Supplicant' for Wireless.

Both these can be replaced by WICD which can operate in Command Line and GUI:

http://wicd.sourceforge.net

In Raspbian on the command line type the following and press enter after each, following any prompts:

sudo su
apt-get update
apt -get install wicd
apt-get remove --purge network-manager
reboot

I believe these instructions are OK, I am not on my Pi at present....

This would be a good time for someone to post (again!), the XKCD cartoon - the one that begins with "There are 14 competing standards..." and ends with "There are 15 competing standards..."
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

(One of the best lines I've seen on this board lately)

Locking post. It has got out of hand. If the original poster would like to start another thread, hopefully people won't get quite so het up over nothing next time.
