Can i use the Khadas 10 or 24 watt PSU on my Pi 4?

Wed Aug 05, 2020 2:37 am

So i ordered all the stuff for a pi4 rig, i have the case, the SD card, the board and the HDMI type C to HDMI cable. The official supply i wont get for another 2 days but i want to fire it up and start working with it.

I have 2 power supplys now that are good the 10 watt might not be enough to work it hard i think its 2amp but the 24 watt im sure it will. The 24 watt is a multi output supply type C out has 5Volt 3amp, 9volt 2.7amp and 12volt 2amp

would it be safe to use one of these? the 10 watt has USB out to type C and the 24watt has typeC to type C

They did it for the same reason they flipped the USB and Lan plugs around, because they can. AND YOU STILL BOUGHT ONE! :|

They're both *safe*. You're correct that the 2A supply may not be enough. It would *probably* boot the Pi, but your available current for USB devices can't be relied on to be more than 200mA. (I could, for instance, work with that through my KVM switch because that wouldn't require the Pi to power keyboard, mouse, or video.)

As for the other PSU...it depends on what variant of the Pi4B you have, specifically if it is a v1.1 or v1.2 board. If it's a recent Pi4B4, it's *probably* a v1.2. In any case, if you avoid using an "e-marked" USB cable you should be okay no matter which board revision you have.

It's excessive volts not amps that let the magic blue smoke escape.

As long as the supply is 5V ±5% (4.75V to 5.25V) then nothing bad happens. The RPi will only draw the amps it needs.

Well im going to wait, i got it all together and before i plugged it in i realized i got the wrong cable to plug into the pi to the HDMI cable.

I got the HDMI C to HDMI and i needed micro so im just going to wait.

The issue i have with the Khadas power brick is it has 3 voltage outs to the USB C plug (i guess) it has 3 different voltages on the outside of the power brick 5V, 9V and 12V

SO now that i dont have the right HDMI cable i might as well just wait and use the official raspberry pi psu

It won't have more than 5V on any USB connector. That would be a loaded weapon pointed at your foot if it had that.

It won't by default. But it is capable of switching to a higher voltage -- that's what USB-PD is all about. It won't switch unless the connected equipment tells it to, which a Pi won't do. The problem is that the older model of Pi4B told the PD-enabled PSU that it didn't need any power ... :o
Solved on the later revisions, which are not labelled  but can be identified visually if you know where to look -- the info is here somewhere.

The revision code tells you the exact model you've got.

The Khadas power supplies have their own forum at: https://forum.khadas.com/

Not much use until the Pi is operational.

Some one posted on the Khadas forum that the 2 revisions had parts moved around near the SD card slot. The little 5V regulator (i think) was next to it on the older version and under with the new?

MIne is the second, im hoping its right i have the second revision
