Pi 3Bv1.2 Fails to Boot After Apt Update and Upgrade

Thu Jul 30, 2020 10:01 pm

I built a SD card using Etcher to load 2020-04-28 retropie-buster-4.6-rpi2_rpi3.img.gz. The Pi is 3Bv1.2 and has been running this build until yesterday when my Grandson crashed it. The PSU is an official Pi manufacture.

With the SD card installed, the Pi boots normally and I am able to configure RaspiOS and RetroPi. During this process, there are several Shutdowns with restart and everything works according to spec. When I run apt-get update and then apt-get upgrade to bring the system to current levels, see the console listing below, the upgraded system fails to boot and only displays a multi-colored screen but no pineapples.

Here is the console listing showing the restarts and the updates.

I see some error messages in the log but I do not know how to fix them and this is the first time I have ever has a system update/upgrade cause a system to be non-bootable.

Someone please give some guidance on how to proceed.

Thank you.

It's not uncommon for special builds to be intolerant up update/upgrade cycles. You may want to go back to the source of your download to see if there is a newer release package.

Point of curiosity... "Pi3Bv1.2"? I know about the Pi2Bv1.2 but I don't think I've ever heard of a Pi3Bv1.2. Could you verify that designation, please?

The error messages from dkms are not fatal and would certainly not cause a failure to boot.
The upgraded system fails to boot and only displays a multi-colored screen but no pineapples.
You probably mean raspberries, not pineapples ? Take a look at viewtopic.php?f=28&t=58151 and see where - in the boot process - your system stops.

This download is the most current build available from RetroPi. I have done this several times in the recent past with this build and have not had problems. Looks like there is something in the last batch of updates that is causing difficulties.

I checked the /proc/cpuinfo and this information was present " Raspberry Pi 3 Model B Rev 1.2". I do have some special code in config.txt to allow this machine to boot Stretch and later versions. <--- updated to reference Stretch

Code: Select all

# Magic Runes from Phil Elwell to get around OTP error
# Specific to my RPi3Bv1.2
decode_0001=0x8cf457a7
Thank you for your assistance.

Fair enough. Thanks.

Later than Jessie is Stretch, and that was current when the Pi3B was launched, so nothing special should be needed. And, of course, Buster (the current major release) will work. (This is assuming I remember major version release dates and board release dates without looking them up...)

Edit to add... For most Pis, the exact board revision doesn't really matter most of the time. The exceptions are some of the Model B boards (where v2.0 was significant) and the Pi2B where the SoC changed between v.1.1 and v1.2--which is an underclocked Pi3B without WiFi.

Yeah, you are right. The fruits are Raspberries and not pineapples. How could I make such a mistake?

Tomorrow, I will try an apt update followed by an apt full-upgrade and see what happens.

Re: Pi 3Bv1.2 Fails to Boot After Apt Update and Upgrade

Sat Aug 01, 2020 3:35 am

I wrote the RetroPi 2020-04-28 retropie-buster-4.6-rpi2_rpi3.img.gz image to the SDcard, booted it on the Pi, and then did an apt update followed by an apt full-upgrade. Did a shutdown -r now and the Pi never came back up. I watched the LEDs and saw the power(red) LED on solid while the act(green) blinked a bunch and then turned off. The monitor had the multi colored screen with no Raspberries.

I looked at the /boot contents of the raw 4.6 distribution to the /boot contents following the apt update and full-upgrade. Not knowing what to look for, I compared the modules names in the /boot directory and observed two new modules are present in the updated /boot directory:
  1. bcm2708-rpi-b-rev1.dtb
  2. bcm2711-rpi-cm4.dtb
When RaspOS went from Jessie to Stretch, this Pi would not boot Stretch. Aftersome discussions, Phil Elwell provided a patch that allowed this Pi to boot Stretch and there has been no trouble with Buster booting until now.

The addition of the new module bcm2708-rpi-b-rev1.dtb inicates the boot process has been altered to split processing for the Pi3bv1.2 into a new module and something is not right.

I think the Rpi 3Bv1.2 is not being handled correctly by the new module.

Is posting this here sufficient to escalate the problem to Rpi Engineering?

Thank you for your assistance.

I checked my Pi 3B and that is a Rev 1.2 - A02082. More curiously there doesn't ever seem to have been a 3B rev 1.0 or 1.1 model according to the 'used in the wild' list -

https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... /README.md

But, more usefully, given I do seem to have exactly what the OP has, I can report that I have had no problems with Raspberry Pi OS and the 5.4 kernel upgrade. Can't speak for using RetroPI.

From the OP's list of packages being upgraded; some of those seem to be from some time ago.

I would suggest putting the kernel update on hold, doing the upgrade, and seeing if it still boots. Then applying the kernel upgrade to see if it then doesn't. That should help narrow it down to whether a kernel upgrade issue or something else.

I do not think that's correct. I would take it that 'bcm2708-rpi-b-rev1.dtb' applies to Rev 1 of the original B's, sometimes now referred to as 1B's.

AFAIAA, that should have been present for a while rather than only appearing with the 5.4 upgrade. My /boot/bcm* list on my Pi 3B Rev 1.2 using 5.4 is ...

Code: Select all

/boot/bcm2708-rpi-b.dtb /boot/bcm2710-rpi-2-b.dtb
/boot/bcm2708-rpi-b-plus.dtb /boot/bcm2710-rpi-3-b.dtb
/boot/bcm2708-rpi-b-rev1.dtb /boot/bcm2710-rpi-3-b-plus.dtb
/boot/bcm2708-rpi-cm.dtb /boot/bcm2710-rpi-cm3.dtb
/boot/bcm2708-rpi-zero.dtb /boot/bcm2711-rpi-4-b.dtb
/boot/bcm2708-rpi-zero-w.dtb /boot/bcm2711-rpi-cm4.dtb
/boot/bcm2709-rpi-2-b.dtb
Perhaps '/boot/bcm2708-rpi-b-rev1.dtb' was not included by the RetroPi distro as not being useful, but the 5.4 upgrade has reintroduced it. I can't imagine that it would however be the cause of the issues you are experiencing.

I did an apt update followed by apt hold libraspberrypi-bin libraspberrypi-dev libraspberrypi-doc libraspberrypi0 raspberrypi-bootloader raspberrypi-kernel raspberrypi-kernel-headers raspberrypi-sys-mods, and followed by apt upgrade.

The system reboot correctly. This reduced the number of suspects so hippy, thank you for the suggestion. I will now look at the held updates to learn more.

Not sure they are. There's a commonality in not booting but I don't see the other poster saying their Pi 3B only fails after an upgrade.

Hi Butch,

Can you test with the latest nightly(ish) vanilla Raspberry Pi OS image? You can download it from here: https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/night ... -armhf.zip

If that doesn't boot, try overwriting the firmware files with those from https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware ... aster/boot ? Just start.elf and fixup.dat should be fine.

I can assure you that the special board-specific license I gave you is still honoured - if it wasn't then you would see the 4 long, 4 short error pattern on the green LED.

Howdy Phil,

I downloaded the latest nightly image and wrote it to a SD card. I installed the board specific license data, placed the SD card in the Pi, and applied power. The result was the same, the multi-colored screen on the monitor and no raspberries. The ACT LED was off

I downloaded the two firmware files: start.elf and fixup.dat and copied them to the /boot directory. I placed the SD card in the Pi and applied power but not joy. Multi-colored screen but no raspberries. The ACT LED was off. The download was by Foxfire and I did a drag and drop to place the new files in /boot. The file explorer complained that files by those names already existed and what did I want to do? I chose overwrite.

Thank you for your assistance and what is next?

Regards,

Butch

I tested the default RasPiOS32 image on my 3Bv1.2 and it booted up after updates. I even double-checked with an update/full-upgrade after rebooting, and all files were up-to-date.
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,

This seems to suggest that the OP's 3B Rev 1.2 may not be the same as everyone else's 3B Rev 1.2, especially following "I do have some special code in config.txt to allow this machine to boot Stretch and later versions".

Can you clarify what the situation is, if other 3B owners are wasting their time trying to help figure the problem out because it is different to what they have ?

The OTP failed to program correctly during manufacture, but this wasn't spotted at the time. A subsequent firmware release made the error fatal, but the key - which will only work on Butch's board and won't do anything useful for anyone else - is a workaround.

Thanks. I guess I should have checked the OP's posting history -

Reading back through the thread, I missed the OP's edit which referenced that.

I would concur. This is the second time you've been bitten by this issue and I suspect it may not be the last if you continue using it.

On the bright side, as it's clearly a manufacturing defect, you should be able to get your money back from the retailer you bought it from.

Re: Pi 3Bv1.2 Fails to Boot After Apt Update and Upgrade

I don't think there's any indication that the two problems are caused by the same issue, but if Butch wants to send the corpse to me (email phil@raspberrypi.com to arrange) I can do a postmortem.

Phil,

I suspected that this might be the end for updates to this Pi board. :( I will get it running again with Retropie and quit doing updates. No updates will not be a problem because the system is for my Grandson's use for game playing.

Now to save up for a new 4B.

Thank you Phil for all your help on this. I really do appreciate it. If you every come to Dallas, holler at me (512-755-3799 or butch@kemperfamily.us) and I will treat you a home cooked, Texas sized, ribeye steak along with cold Corona beer from Mexico.

Regards,

Butch

Hippy,

After getting almost 4 years of good use from the Pi and probably several more as a gaming system for my Grandson, I will not return the board to the retailer for a manufacturing defect. That is not the right thing to do.

Thank you for your and others assistance in helping me with the problem. I appreciate very much those that share their expertise with others.

Regards,

Butch
