I am reading the camera guide and am wondering about chapter 7 flash photography
with a led.
Is it necessary to modify the device tree just to turn on the led?
If the purpose of the chapter to show how to modify the device tree then
I understand.

If you wish to use the firmware flash driver, then yes you have to modify the dt-blob.bin file. Whilst the syntax of this is very similar to device tree, it isn't really, and it's only used by the firmware and not the Linux kernel.
