You need the hardware onboard so no way to do with a firmware update. No realistic way of adding it on board. You could I guess add a BT USB dongle but that would probably be more than just buying a new Pi ZeroW.

But they have the same BCM2835 chip

That is the SoC, Bluetooth and Wireless require additional components, so what part of not feasible do you not comprehend ??

No one knows what is real inside. Perhaps there everything is included starting with some kind of release.
Configuration can only bit in configuration.
This is marketing.

Marketing, it is.
They add the BT and WiFi parts to the board, a radio chip, antenna and the other parts needed and then sell it for more as a ZeroW.

What you are suggesting is taking a board without the WiFi and BT chips on and no antenna anywhere to be seen as they are not there and magically make them appear.

Go have a search for diagrams, pictures and X-RAYS of the boards in question.
Then come back and say it can still be done.

This is nonsense.

The BCM2835 does not have WiFi or Bluetooth on the chip. That is a known fact.
The Zero W has an extra chip to do that. It also has on-board antenna. More known facts.

No amount of "bit configuration" is going to change the fact that they are different boards.
Seeing as quite a few of the Pi employees worked for Broadcom and some were involved in the design of the BCM2835, they certainly do know what is "real inside".
Unreadable squiggle

Take it from me, a Raspberry Pi engineer (See logo on right). I know what is real inside because I worked on the BCM2835 whilst working at Brcm.

You cannot upgrade a Zero to a ZeroW. The wireless/BT chip is simply not there. There is no "software" switch to turn it on, the HW simply isn't present on the standard Zero.

Googling photo or looking at both boards in some online shop would give you answer too, difference is clearly visible. Anyway there are expansion boards for zero to add wifi and bt like https://www.adafruit.com/product/3283 and possibly also usb hub http://referencedesigner.com/blog/buy-products/ but easiest is to just buy zero W.

https://thepihut.com/products/red-bear- ... -wifi-btle costs more than a new ZeroW. It's not a sensible option.

Sensible? Was under impression that we already missed that boat ;-)
Anyway adafruit had saner price so maybe it could still be sold for similar price somewhere else since nowadays it is not that much useful.
