Which to choose to install the Pi OS?

Tue Jun 30, 2020 2:35 am

Hi, I have a Mac. I just received my Pi4 and a new micro sd card. I went to the download page and clicked on "Raspberry Pi Imager for MacOS". When I launched it, I see Raspberry Pi OS (320bit), Raspberry Pi OS (other), Ubuntu, etc. Which one am I supposed to choose?

I also tried to download the OS images to the SD card but which am I supposed to choose? Raspberry Pi OS (previously called Raspbian) or NOOBS?

Use Raspberry Pi OS (formerly Raspbian). Assuming you want the graphical desktop, you want either the full, or the full with recommended additional software (about a 2.5GB download). you can get to the downloads through the "Downloads" link at the top of every page of this web site.

Raspberry Pi OS (32-bit) with desktop is probably your best option, since it's well tested and stable, and it's the 1st option on the main Imager OS selection window. Which is why it says (Recommended).

Raspberry Pi OS (other) lets you choose between a version with additional productivity and educational software (that you can install later if you need to), and Lite, which is command line only, for people who don't need the extra software or desktop GUI (servers and headless systems often use the Lite version).

Other options are for people who know what they are. If you don't know, then don't worry about it and just take the Recommended option.

Thanks. For this one, I use it for Octoprint.

Am I supposed to install OctoPi on top of Raspberry Pi OS (32-bit) to the new SD card or just install OctoPi?

Looking at that site, OctoPi is an entire OS image. That is, you would install that by itself. Alternatively, you can install RPi0S and then add OctoPrint to it. You should come out about the same either way. The difference being that with the OctoPi image, you'll only get the software packages they chose to include, while with RpiOS you'll start with what the RPF chose.

I have--in the past--had problems with pre-built images from third parties. This is because they may or may not update their images, and using apt to do an update/upgrade may wipe out critical system components. (I have a Pi0 running a very old image from Adafruit. They have never updated it, and I can't without nuking their changes. Fortuneately, it's a complete standalone device.) If you go with an RPiOS image and make any changes to that, you'll be able to keep it current. If you keep track of changes that are needed, you'll be able to build a new image when a major release comes along.

It looks like OctoPi images based on Buster are available, so just download that and use the RPi Imager (or Etcher) to write your card.

Choose OS > Use custom, and select the OctoPi image you downloaded (no need to extract the image first, RPi Imager will do that for you).

Thanks. I have tried three different methods but none of them is working.

For the one you mentioned, the 4K TV says there is no signal.

I also tried Raspberry Pi OS (320bit). Again, the TV says that there is no signal.

I also downloaded OctoPi 0.17.0 from https://octoprint.org/download/
Then, entered my id and password for wifi connection. Also changed the country under the Atom editor.

Again, the 4K TV states that there is no signal. When to my router and it did not detect the Pi4.

I put it inside the Argon One Pi4 enclosure. All I get is a red LED at the front.

Could you please tell me what to do next?

Next step is to read the stickies at the top of this forum page. There are several that might prove useful to you. First one to read is the one about problems booting.

Only red LED. No LED. Tried to create boot OS of different versions under both Mac OS and Windows 10. Nothing work. Somewhere it mentioned that no green LED means no booth from SD card problem. Mine is brand new SanDisk Extreme 32GB. I think is support.

I followed the steps in : https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/

to do a Pi 4 EEPROM boot recovery. In Step 6, the green LED is supposed to blink rapidly but again, only solid red LED.

Using another new SD card (SanDisk Ultra 64GB) resulted in the same "only solid red LED" issue. Does that mean the Pi4 I got is defective and it is time to return it?

Solid red led with no green led activity indeed means your PI 4B has shuffled off this mortal coil. I had one (4B 8 GB) do exactly the same thing after approximately 36 hours of perfectly normal operation.

Sadly it is time to return it. On the upside, many, many folks have had absolutely no issues so we are definitely the outliers in the grand MTBF lottery of life.

Thanks for the suggestion. Definitely I got a lemon. Got a new Pi4. It has been working fine for two days. Hope it stays that way.

My replacement 4B 8 GB has been behaving perfectly normally for almost a month.
