Ubuntu 20.04 new install on raspberry pi 4 ethernet won't work

Sat Jun 27, 2020 10:38 pm

Hello
I have been trying to work this out by tons of online looking up and found something that worked a week ago but now does not. I tried to reinstall ubuntu today because I did something to the one I had working last week.
Someone had a fix to get the internet working with "sudo dhclient -v" then "sudo dhclient -v -r" and then I was able to get update and upgrade and install "sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop" but now this doesn't work.
I am not really good at this and had all week trying to get the resolution to work on the tv screen I finally got that working but then messed up something else and so that is why I am trying to do another install.
It claims ubuntu is good for raspberry pi 4 but it really is not very good at all, but I do not like raspbian so really want to get ubuntu working.
Any help would be great
Thank you

Ubuntu is not meant to be a desktop, it's geared towards a wired server. it's tweaked/built for that purpose.

if you really want a working system, raspberry pi os is the best option. if it's lxde you don't like, you can grab the lite version & do your own like you were doing with Ubuntu. i prefer a minimal install myself & have been using raspi lite + budgie-desktop, the budgie is bare bones just the gui so you can pick the apps you want.

there's a few threads on other gui options, use the search.

Thanks for response. I really would like to get the ethernet working with this fresh install of ubuntu. The fix I found online did get the first install ethernet working, but now that fix does not work, and someone said it happened because of an update. I was hoping to find someone on here that may have figured it out. They claim to have support for ubuntu on raspberry pi but I don't see any support.

Yes thank you but that is why I posted here, no help there. I tried a different method which was not to download off the Raspberry pi imager and it works. I appreciate the replies thank you.

This may sound silly, but did you try disconnecting, then reattaching, the network cable? I have had similar problems on my rpi4, and found that if I unplug the network cable, then reattach, it works. I’m not sure what breaks it, but it seems only to happen one time per install (I have had to reload the Ubuntu images for other reasons), then not give me problems again. Trick is, Ubuntu must be running when you unplug and reattach the network cable.

You're not using a "user" configured USB-BOOT; are you?
I had the exact same problem. I solved it with: "sudo dhclient -4"....

IIRC anyway, I moved back to RaspberryPi OS and no more problems.

Ubuntu is good; if you're running a server. it's useless as a desktop. ;)
One man's trash is another man's treasure! :) Pi's I have; Pi Zero, Pi Zero W, Pi 2 x2, Pi 3 x2, Pi 4 4GB x2.

Return to “Ubuntu”
