HDMI to VGA convert adapter. Will this work?

I am trying to find an inexpensive monitor. Of course its gonna be an older one, thus no HDMI support. I found an HDMI to VGA converter adapter on ebay:

Some people say 'yes, no problem's, and some say 'it broke my pi'. They're nice little things to have - I use mine to play PS3 on an old VGA projector, but I haven't dared use it with the Pi...

I'm using this kind of device (bought off Amazon) without problems.
An alternative would be a monitor with a DVI-D (Digital, not DVI-Analog!) input. You can use an even cheaper adapter. I use one of these too with a second hand TFT screen.
