Re: How much cost does HDMI add?

As I had posted in the comments http://www.raspberrypi.org/?p=.....omment-370

I agree that it [HDMI] is the more widely available (especially on TVs) standard and probably the right choice for this project. I was also not aware that it was built into the chip.

I’m still curious as to how much cost it adds anyway. I can’t find the licensing fees at the official http://www.hdmi.org/

Searching for HDMI licensing fees gets me articles from 2006 about cost being reduce to $10,000/year. I believe that there are per unit costs as well, but I don’t know. That $10,000/year figure might also include HDCP licensing as well as the licensing for the signaling and physical connectors.

Are you directly paying any licensing fees, or are they all built into the cost of the parts? (chip and physical connector)

I posted my follow up comment to a new forum topic as it was requesting different info. It can be found here: http://www.raspberrypi.org/?pa.....&t=22

Maybe because it's more than 5 years old?

TrapdoorSmoke, please don't reply to questions that are old.
There are 10 types of people: those who understand binary and those who don't.

kusti8,
TrapdoorSmoke, please don't reply to questions that are old.
On the other hand it is still an unanswered question.

The HDMI organization still requires 10000 or 5000 dollars per year in membership fees in order to use their stuff.

They still require some cents per unit shipped.

They still require that the fees are paid by the end of the supply chain. I.e. if you use a Pi in your product you are liable to pay.

It's extortion. It needs to be addressed.

Sorry I don't have any links to hand to support what I say but Google can soon fill you in.

Raspberry Pi (trading) is an HDMI Adopter. We pay royalties as specified in the HDMI adoption agreement for the use of the standard independently of sales of the Pi - for this reason the cost of licencing HDMI is baked into the Pi's total cost.
