Problem with Raspberry Pi 4 ... I was trying to boot from USB

Sun May 24, 2020 5:21 am

Hello! Yesterday I got a Raspberry Pi 4, everything perfect ... I didn't have much knowledge of what I was doing ... I was trying to boot from USB, but it went wrong. I don't remember well what I did. I was using it from SSH. Suddenly I get an error ... When I see the board, the red led was on and the yellow led with the 4 flashes of the start.elf or something like that. I tried using the method of recovering the EEPROM, the one of putting some files in an empty formatted SD, but it didn't work for me. Will it be fixed?

have you tried booting it from microSD card? (the microSD card MUST contain an OS supported to run in RPi4B)

Code to boot from USB without an SD card is not yet released officially. Don't try to install it yet!

Methinks part of the problem is that there are some YouTube videos on RPi4B USB Booting functionality that were published....

at first sight.....giving it an "impression" that the functionality is "officially released"

+1
yeah, but it is only officially released when a blog post about it appears on the Raspberry.org site.

some people just cannot suppress their impatience, and feeling of entitlement. It is the "zeitgeist" of this generation.

Actually, if you ignore all the rubbish published by some YouTubers and places like Toms Hardware and just follow the instructions at RaspberrryPi.org website, then the process is reasonably simple and it just works. I just did it on a Pi4 2GB I bought yesterday. If you mess up... just follow the SDCARD recovery method to get back to normal.

I'm happily booting from a USB SSD drive.

I think I have also fallen foul of prematurely testing this new feature.

I can't now seem to boot my RPI4 in any configuration - I've tried multiple SD cards, EEPROM recovery (RPI4 gives 4x green flashes as expected with no SD card). I'm running headless and waiting for a Micro HDMI cable to arrive so I can see what's going on. I've tested the SD cards in another 2B+ and it all works fine. It seems as though the RPI4 is constantly rebooting (the /boot/ssh file is removed when I re-insert the SD card into my laptop). The activity lights on the unit look okay - network activity lights flashing, green ACT light flashing. My only thought is that my cards are 32 Gb and I've read this can be problematic? I'd originally been able to boot with these cards no problem, however.
