RPi4 TV HAT & TVheadend finds services but won't play

Sun May 17, 2020 1:36 pm

Hi I've just bought a RPi4b with a TV Hat. I have followed the tutorials to setup TVheadend on Raspbian and LibreElec (2 different SD cards) and I can get at best 14 muxes, 136 services, 70 mapped channels. The best result I had was the ability to play a few channels on the Live TV Player on TVheadend with my indoor aerial. Since then I have not been able to play any channels and get "An unknown error occured" despite many of the channels being mapped. My latest attempt I have 14 muxes, 94 services of which 33 are mapped.

I am using my outdoor TV aerial which has about 75% strength according to my tv. I have also tried with an indoor aerial. Because of the lockdown, I have been unable to try at another location with another aerial.

Any suggestions as to why I can't play the mapped channels?

I have attached several screenshots in case this helps.

The tvheadend data in /usr/share/tvheadend/data/dvb-scan/dvb-t/uk-Fenton (on my version of Raspbian Buster) looks like it's missing some channels compared to https://ukfree.tv/transmitters/tv/Fenton

OK
  • C21 - BBC B HD
  • C22 - Arqiva A
  • C24 - BBC A
  • C25 - SDN
  • C27 - D3&4
  • C28 - Arqiva B
  • C32 - COM7 replacement HD
Not OK
  • C29 - Local
  • C34 - Com8 replacement
Decommissioned from 30th June to make way for 5G phones.
  • C55 - Com7
  • C56 - Com8
The tables come from https://linuxtv.org/downloads/dtv-scan- ... ST.tar.bz2 and that's still wrong.

The table at https://git.linuxtv.org/dtv-scan-tables.git/ is better as it includeds CH55 & CH56 but is still incomplete.

Thanks Doug. I will check to see if they are in my mux list later. I'm new to scan tables and tvheadend but I'm learning fast.

My main problem is getting the streams to play. Since my last post I have bought a Microsoft Xbox One USB Digital TV tuner. I had 2 SD cards with Raspbian and LibreElec installed. Both OS recognise the Microsoft and TV hat tuners and found muxes and network streams. However only the Microsoft tuner will actually play the channels and that only works on LibreElec. This works well and I can use it with the ios TvhClient app.

I have tried 2 TV hats and neither will play the channels but the fact that the Microsoft tuner works well means that it is not an aerial problem. So I have a part solution although I am limited to using it on just LibreElec and not with the 2 TV hats I now have. I would still like to get a TV hat or Microsoft tuner working on Raspbian as that will be my main OS. I have tried scanning with the Fenton details and the default but the TV hats just won't play. Any ideas as to why it maps the network streams but won't play?

I wonder if it could be an issue with the Pi itself? My pi 4 is new but gets very hot (80 degrees and thermometer warning) when running plex. I have emailed the pi hut from where I bought it so will see what they say.

In the meantime I have wiped LibreElec from my 128GB card and I am currently attempting to triple boot Raspbian, LibreElec and Retropie using PINN. Then I will try the TV tuners again to see if they will work on any of those. And I will check the extra muxes.

I have just rescanned my normal TV and I get 145 digital channels (100 TV, 33 Radio and 12 Data). Using the Microsoft tuner on tvheadend I believe it found 138 services. It didn't find any HD ones though.

I have now set up my 128GB SD card to triple boot Raspbian, LibreElec and Retropie. The Xbox one TV Tuner still works well with LibreElec. In fact it found all 145 services that my TV did! However Raspbian still fails to be able to play any streams and both OS still fail to work with the TV Hat.

You'll have to look at how LibreElec decides which MUXes to scan. Their data may be more current.

I have made some progress. I have discovered that LibreElec includes the firmware for the Xbox One TV tuner by default but Raspbian, doesn’t despite the tuner showing in the tuner list in tvheadend. This meant that the Xbox One TV tuner wouldn't work on Raspbian Buster.

I downloaded the latest firmware for linux from here: http://palosaari.fi/linux/v4l-dvb/firmw ... 02/latest/

The file is called dvb-demod-mn88472-02.fw

Place the file in the /lib/firmware folder.

Rescan muxes in tvheadend

Success! The Xbox One TV tuner now works on Raspbian Buster. I scanned and got all 145 services.
