Does anyone know the equivalent for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS for Raspberian's set hdmi_safe to 1?

It'll be hdmi_safe=1 because that stuff is OS agnostic. The hard part with Ubuntu is knowing where they store the active /boot/config.txt.

On Ubuntu-MATE 18.04 config.txt is in the main directory of the boot drive.

Also, to fix the issue of booting to flashing blank screen (e.g., when using legacy monitor with HDMI adapter), set hdmi_drive=1.
