Using Pi To Display information in Office

Wed Dec 26, 2012 6:42 pm

Hi guys!
After recieving my pi in October, i have been mainly using it as a media center and playing around with debian. I had an idea that i could use the pi to display information in the office or waiting room at work. I have not found any related software yet, and am wondering if anyone else is interested in building some software or know of any ways of doing this.
Here is what I would like to do:
I would like to be able to email a powerpoint or messages to a certain email, and the pi automatically displays it. Or, if that is not possible, be able to easily remotely access the pi and copy a powerpoint to it.

• Don't like the board ? Missing features ? Change to the prosilver theme ! You can find it in your settings.
• Don't like to search the forum BEFORE posting 'cos it's useless ? Try googling : yoursearchtermshere site:raspberrypi.org

I have not ask my friend how he is doing it but he has a couple dozen Raspi's at his company doing exactly what you are asking and using it for inter office messages and employee information boards that are served from one central raspi.

I will ask him what apps he is using to achieve this.
Saved his company many thousands of dollars by replacing the old systems with the very inexpensive Raspberrypi's.
Since he works for an IT based company he was kind of overwhelmed at the response from his techs when he handed them Raspberrypi's to play around with and that they have been using them to replace much more expensive servers that were doing minimal and menial tasks.
If you are more worried about ,spelling, punctuation or grammar you have probably already missed the point so please just move on.

Anything wrong with an html page that refreshes as often as you want?
Trivial implementation, easy to edit, server and client software off the shelf.

I'm also quite interested in this.

For Ghans- Screenly does look quite promising. Is there any way to embed a powerpoint like thing into a web page or convert it into a picture? Have you tried screenly yourself?

There's allways the option of setting up one RPi as a intranet (internal) web server and just using browsers on the other screens any changes are then only made on the server. ;)

If you find a solution please post it in the wiki the forum dies too quick

I was in the doctors surgery the other day and they have a screen up that does this sort of thing. I bet they paid a considerable amount of money for it...a Raspi + OSS software would do the same job (better in fact) and cost a minimal amount of money.
