Fresh Install: Cannot Update

Wed Mar 25, 2020 9:57 pm

Hi,

I just did a fresh install of Raspbian Lite on my Pi 4B. I set up my WiFi correctly and everything, although no matter what I try, I get the following message:

Code: Select all

[email protected]:~ $ sudo apt update

My resolv.conf looks like this, if it matters:

Code: Select all

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi.

You might find that the server you were connecting to was in the process of being updated , I would suggest trying the sudo apt update command again to see if it works now.

I ran sudo apt update just now, but it still comes up with the same error.

Is the Pi's clock set correctly? Updates will error if tried immediately after boot, before the clock has synchronised with a timeserver.
Not sure if that is the same error message, though.

timedatectl reports the System Clock is not synchronized. I did try to set it manually the other day to fix potential time issues, but that didn't help.

What happens if you try to ping the 2 servers.

like this

Code: Select all

ping -c5 93.93.135.117
ping -c5 93.93.128.193

You can also temperately set the date/time with this command , it will also prove you have a working internet connection

Code: Select all

sudo date -s "$(wget -qSO- --max-redirect=0 google.com 2>&1 | grep Date: | cut -d' ' -f5-8)Z"

Then this suggests one of the following may actually be the cause of your problems.

1. Bad or corrupted image download
2. Card reader is not fully compliant with the SD card type you are using
3. SD card is going bad or is a fake
4. Image not being written to card correctly

My bad, turns out it was fine. It just wanted me to log in but never updated to show that it wanted the username.

So what do you get if you run these pings

Code: Select all

ping -c5 8.8.8.8
ping -c5 google.com
If things still aren't running smoothly and as expected may be it is one of the problems I suggested.

I don't think it's any of the things you mentioned. The SD card has always worked on DietPi and I'm certain the download was not corrupt when I flashed it to the SD.

From the results of the last lot of pings you either don't have the pi connected to your network or your network is not forwarding your pi's request to the internet.

Please post the results of

Code: Select all

 ifconfig

Your network is not connected to the public internet.
How do you have it wired or what WiFi are you using?

It should be connected. I'm connected via WiFi at home.
The router is connected to a Google WiFi mesh hub, though I don't think that should be an issue.

Well the ping results show it is not, do you have another pc connected to the same network and can that access web sites.

I'm having the same problem. I installed buster version on my new 4B, and getting it to update fails at the same step every time. Tried installing retropie, and that fails also due to the fact that it can't get necessary packages from raspbian.raspberry.org mostly. Tried wi-fi and ethernet, doesn't make a difference. The update always fails tries to get the 69.1MB packages. Gets to 2% from the looks of it and times out. Pinging 93.93.128.193 I see no issues.

Do you have your RPi connected to your router/WiFi access point or are you using something like Windows "Internet Connection Sharing" or a Windows "Mobile Hotspot"?

Is your router blocking your RPi from accessing the public internet? Give it a reboot, hit the config page at http://192.168.0.1 http://192.168.1.1 http://192.168.0.254 or http://192.168.1.254 (device dependent).

I don't have access to the router information, someone else does. Even then, I don't think Google's Mesh WiFi stuff automatically blocks anything unknown from reaching the internet.
