Power supply for the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B

Wed Mar 25, 2020 3:10 pm

Hello, I want to be thorough before I actually do stuff to this bad boy because it's reasonably expensive for me and I don't want to fry it. I was wondering if a super charger from Huawei that outputs 5V, 3A or 4.5V, 5A or 5V, 4.5A will do the trick and won't long-term damage my Pi.

All USB-C power supplies should work, but we do sell a very cheap and guaranteed to work power supply that you can trust.

So I can be 100% certain that a 4.5A battery won't do anything harmful to the Pi?

Sadly, there's only Galago Market near my country and even they aren't listed when specifying location in the shop. :(

No, only 99.5% (guesstimate).
If the PSU keeps top the specified voltage throughout its load range, and can actually supply 3A, you should be OK.
If you must absolutely minimise risk, get the official Pi USB-C supply.

Your call. Remember no-one at RPF/RPT will guarantee a 3rd party supply.

No, you can't be certain of that at all.

It depends what voltage the battery is providing. Any voltage higher than 5.25 volts applied to the power supply of the RPi may cause fatal damage.

And any voltage higher than 3.3 volts applied to the gpio pins on the 40-way header is likely to cause fatal damage.

Sorry, no - the current capability (w.r.t. to being "harmful") is largely irrelevant - it's the voltage output that's important. However I would not recommend any "random" battery (pack). You need a proper USB C power supply/charger. As @jamesh has already indicated, whilst some true USB C based 'phone power supplies/chargers may be O.K. (ie. are unlikely to damage a P4 but may not provide sufficient current when, for example, a USB-based HDD is required to be plugged in to the P4), what is recommended is an official power supply.
FWIW, examples of U.K. versions**, their "current-loading" behaviour and a link to a known working USB C charger/PSU can be found here:

Trev.
** Including those for earlier Pi's using a uUSB connector.
Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

Assuming this the same site you are referring to they actually stock the official raspberrypi PSU in black or white.

While over-voltage will damage the Pi, under-voltage or insufficient current capability (leading to low voltage) will cause unreliable operation.
That might corrupt the SD card.

As above, use the "official" PSU, its very very cheap and works perfectly.
