Which Pi do i need to watch 1080p video from a satellite tuner?

Tue Mar 24, 2020 9:54 pm

Hello there :)

I'm a beginner, so i have Raspian installed on my pc to test it out.

The main thing i want to do with a Pi is to watch my files on my satelite tuner which are .ts files... I already tested to open them with VLC in Debain and it seems to work perfectly on my i4460 with 16 gb ram...

I also want to watch Youtube video on the Pi at 1080p, higher isnt necessary because my tv only supports up to 1080p. (Samsung 50 inch plasma screen from 2010)

I would like to share all my files on the satelite tuner with the Pi, i managed to browse the content of the files, but is there an more easy way to watch them? (like another mediaplayer in Debian)

I wanted to buy the Pi 4 with 4 gb ram, because i had a simple calculation : the more ram, the smoother or faster, but i can imagine that it isnt necessary to buy this model, Pi 3b with 1 gb would be sufficient too?

In other words:
I would like to get tips of what to buy for this purpose

it would be nice to have a gigabyte network speed on the pi, but i think the pi3 only does 10/100? but maybe that is ok for this situation...

So the main goal is to play media files (.ts) from the sat. reciever and play youtube at 1080p connected through hdmi and controlled by a cordless mouse and keyboard.

I also like to know if i really need a cooler for the pi3b and pi4..... i dont want to pay alot of money for this set especially because the pi itself is already very cheap...

thanks for reading and hopefully you, the reader can be so kind enough to help me ;)

I would go with a 2GB pi4, no cooler need. Run VLC on that. Some .ts files I have are encrypted HD so it can’t play those.

Hello there :)

I'm a beginner, so i have Debian Buster installed on my pc to test it out.

I fixed that for you, what works in x86 Debian Buster on a PC will not necessary work in Raspbian Buster ARMHF running on the Raspberry Pi SBC.

How is the Satellite Tuner connected ???

Certain tuners have firmware with network connectivity so you can ftp files around or use web interface...

Thanx for the replies... :)

It is connected through an lan i can browse on it very easily with W10...

I can ftp the tuner (enigma2) and see all of the files (openpli) as the files on de hdd, which are all .ts files..

I know i cant compare a i5 with a raspberry but i just wanted to know if the .ts would play and they did...

i've seen that youtube video's are very choppy now on the rp... so i dont know if i buy one just jet...

I was not comparing i5 to RPi, I was stating the underlying CPU Architecture.

Regards YouTube and similar then a Raspberry Pi 4B 2GB should suffice if running LibreElec which is a dedicated Multimedia Platform :

As a quick test I played a .ts file (378MB, SD recorded TV show) in VLC 3.0.8 on a pi3 running Raspbian Buster. It worked OK.

Will do
Later, Polperro one looked fine on pi3, playing through chromium. SES one looked blocky at start and dark areas later looked blocky purple/red but that could be my old monitor (HP2310). Otherwise all fine, the F1 race car looked good.
Even later, a new pi4 2GB arrived - videos played OK same as pi3.

thank you very much for the test.. :D :P . it os normal that at 1st the quality of the uhd sample is blocky, so it is on a faster pc... it need to be downloaded first and then played with an mediaplayer (vlc for example)

UHD in H264 is not possible on any Rpi.
Otherwise I'm watching Sat. TV for many years on all of my RPis, SD and HD. I've got a USB-Sat-Receiver connected to one of my RPis and stream any content into my network, including complete transponders.

OK that H264 video with resolution 1920x1080, 25FPS played perfectly on my new pi4 using VLC.
Some time later I might do a test of the pi4 4K with my Samsung 4K 55 inch TV - as the documentation says it can use "a single display at 4K with a 60Hz refresh rate" . Need a good test video.

I use a Flirc case which acts as cooler. Nice and efficient,
