HMDI Problems

Mon Mar 23, 2020 12:57 pm

Hi folks,

last wednesday i got my raspberry pi 4, a proper hdmi kable (no adapter) and the original power cord.
Then I installed Kali Linux and tried it for the first time.
The Pi was on but it had no HDMI output. I wabbled a bit on the black thing over the sd card input and it worked.
But 2 days later i tried the same thing and it doesnt show up anymore. :?:
I tried it on 4 different devices with and without a sd card but no chance.
Everytime i get the same 'error' no HDMI signal. So they know that there is a HDMI connected but it just does not pop up.
Any tips and tricks, please?

best regards

W.r.t. "I wabbled a bit on the black thing over the sd card input and it worked. But 2 days later i tried the same thing and it doesnt show up anymore. :?: " w/o a photo. showing exactly what you "wabbled" I can't be "certain" but it's quite likely you were just "wabbling" the ribbon cable connector clip etc. associated with an official touchscreen display similar to that for the camera and probably disturb the micro-HDMI connecting cable at the same ie. a "red-herring". A pi requires an SD card with a suitable O.S. to boot. Hopefully the Kali Linux version you tried was fully up to date and P4 compatible but, since I don't use that I can't comment further. However, if you are prepared to "take a step back" and re-try with Raspbian** and report back then it's easier for others to help and diagnose problems as the majority that visit this forum will use Raspbian.
What are you using as a HDMI display - monitor, T.V. or other? Was it that giving the "no HDMI signal" message itself?

Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

So I used a monitor and 3 different tv's. Also the O.S. is Pi compatible because it already worked as i said. Nevertheless ill try it with Raspbian and comment again. https://cdn-reichelt.de/bilder/web/xxl_ ... 01_ANW.png.
The thing that i wabbled is in the top left corner (the black thing).
Also a friend of mine said that the pi should show something on the screen, even if there is no sd card.

From angle of the photo in your link - "extreme" top left (or rather, middle left above the sd card holder under the board) is the display flat ribbon cable connector - that has a black clip. On the top edge, left of the ethernet port, is the 40pin GPIO connector - that should not wobble! The display connector clip does because it has to move to lock the ribbon cable in - however wobbling that should not affect the HDMI display . (Of course wobbling a micro-HDMI plug may do so.) What model of P4B (ie. what memory size)? If you get Raspbian going can you set things up so that SSH is enabled for headless use - see section 3 here: https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... /README.md That way, assuming you can log in via something like PuTTY** from another computer there are some diagnostics (via the tvservice command ) that can be run that may tell us how well the Pi is getting info. from the display about what settings are needed etc.

** FWIW, some old notes/examples here: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_p ... aspPi.html
and PuTTY is used here to initially login to run RealVNC's virtual mode within Raspbian when a display is not connected:
