Drives Ejecting themselves.

so I'm new to Using PIs the one I am having an issue with has been used with samba as a NAS project without Issue. I decided I wanted to expand the NAS storage on a fresh Raspbian Full install and a fresh drive however the new drive ( a 4tb 3.5 inch hard drive with an "Inatek" power connector) continually disconnects randomly and whenever I try to write anything to it... sometimes it also ejects the current drive I am using as well... There are two external drives plugged in for clarification the original being a USB travel external type.
what is causing this and can I fix it?

Most likely a power problem.

So are the drives directly plugged into the Pi?
If that's the case then I would suggest you use a powered hub instead.

If not then please clarify your setup.

As DirkS already mentioned it may be a power problem on the RPi
how are you powering your setup?

another possible cause is the USB connection (RPi port side, USB adapter plug side).
with the device powered OFF, try to clean the contacts using an electrical contact cleaner
search the internet on the proper and safe use of electrical contact cleaners

I too am having similar problems - repeated displays of the "removable medium inserted" dialogue box.

I have Pi4 2G with Inateck UA1001 USB SATA adapter which has seperate 12v power supply so I don't think that is the issue. Running latest Raspbian Buster.

VL805 is latest version 000137ad.

I only get this problem with a new Western Digital 1TB drive (WD10 SPZX) which I bought with the intention of using it as a media server. If I try other drives such as Kingston SSD300 or another spinny WD1600BEV which I have lying around there doesn't seem to be a problem.

I have tried the quirks fix as mentioned in viewtopic.php?f=28&t=245931 but to no avail.

I have read that the adapter chipset is possibly implicated, mine is ASM1051E, but wouldn't that affect all the drives?

Have I bought the wrong type of disk?

Hoping for some pointers as I have run out of ideas.

if the Western Digital 1TB drive (WD10 SPZX) on Inateck UA1001 USB SATA adapter also disconnects/ejects when the setup is connected to a w$ (or Mac) laptop / desktop, then it could be the WD10's contacts.

my just completed RPi4B-2GNAS has a 2.5" 4TB Seagate Barracuda HDD connected via Eluteng "Blue" SATA to USB3.0 adapter.

Thanks for that suggestion. I will try cleaning the contacts and also hooking up to Win10 machine.

I think I may have found a problem with my powered USB/SATA adapter. On measuring the voltages on the power pins I have the 12v pins showing the correct voltage but nothing on the 5v or 3.3v. From my googling it seems that 3.3v is not required, but does my WD10 SPZX require 5v in addition to 12v, and might this explain the problems i'm having?

I made these measurements without the USB cable attached, just the supplied 12v power brick.

There does seem to be some componentry attached to the 5v pins but i'm guessing if that's not working then it might fall back to the USB supplied 5v which may not be sufficient.

Guess I will have to start searching for another USB/SATA adapter.
