Raspberry Pi Imager and Raspberry Pi 3B

Fri Mar 13, 2020 1:37 am

Hello,

I have a Raspberry Pi 3B. The 4 is out as well as the other models. When I'm in the Raspberry Pi Imager, I can make a Raspbian image but it doesn't say specifically which models that image supports. Do Raspbian images support all the models of Raspberry Pi? For example, if I made an image, could I take use it on the 3B and a 4 as well?

Yes. Currently, at least. There is a possibility that a separate image may appear at some stage that will only work on the later models of Pi that have 64-bit capable CPUs. But there will still be an image that works on the Pi 0-4 in 32-bit mode for quite a few years to come.

+1 but adding the reminder that older images will probably not work on newer Pi's since such (future) Pi's are likely to need firmware that the old image doesn't have.
Trev.
Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

There is a table here that will tell you what runs on what Pi.

A useful form of presentation. But it is a Wikipedia page with no assurance of accuracy.

I would prefer to trust the Raspbian Release Notes published by Raspberry Pi themselves - http://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspbi ... _notes.txt

I can see at least one place where the information differs. (I don't feel motivated enough to learn to be a Wikipedia editor.)
