Generic IR decoder module??

Does anyone know if there exists a USB device which could detect the infrared pulses of a remote control, decode the binary information and make this information available to the Pi??

In failing that would it be possible to use the GPIO instead I assume the signals are nothing more than OOK with 38kHz modulation.

Does the GPIO have enough timing resolution to perform I/O at 38kHz accurately enough??

Thanks for the link I'll have a look at the code in more detail over the Xmas holiday.

I don't actually own an IR Receiver module would it be possible to substitute this using a PIN / photo diode and an op-amp with TTL output of 3.3v ??
