No sound from 3.5mm jack on a raspberry pi 4 [solved]

Tue Feb 04, 2020 12:28 am

Hi all,
I am not getting any sound on my 3.5mm jack. I have tested with a pair of ordinary headphones and powered speakers. I have used the same configuration on a USB sound card without any problems. You can see my alsa configuration at the following link.
http://alsa-project.org/db/?f=eadcce675 ... 7aa13ac04d
the output of amixer is as follows.
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Playback 0 - 65536
Mono:
Front Left: Playback 65536 [100%] [on]
Front Right: Playback 65536 [100%] [on]
Simple mixer control 'Capture',0
Capabilities: cvolume cvolume-joined cswitch cswitch-joined
Capture channels: Mono
Limits: Capture 0 - 65536
Mono: Capture 26281 [40%] [on]
pi@raspberrypi:/usr/share/sounds/alsa $

aplay -l yields the following.
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: ALSA [bcm2835 ALSA], device 0: bcm2835 ALSA [bcm2835 ALSA]

card 1: Set [C-Media USB Headphone Set], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]

pi@raspberrypi:~ $

I am also attaching my /boot/config.txt file to this message.
Anyone any ideas on what I should try? I can hear a click when the pi reboots which means something is happening.

The sound is line level only so will need amplification.

The one device feeds three potential outputs (analog, HDMI0, and HDMI1) based on a control.
Select the appropriate output from the volume control on the Raspbian desktop, or use "amixer -q cset numid=3 1" (1=analog, 2=HDMI0, 3=HDMI1).

Or you can add "snd_bcm2835.enable_headphones=1 snd_bcm2835.enable_hdmi=1 snd_bcm2835.enable_compat_alsa=0" to /boot/cmdline.txt (do not add any carriage returns) and you'll get 3 independent devices for the 3 audio outputs. We're looking at switching to that by default, but there are a few complications.

raspberry pi 4B , the same problem . but it is ok now . I do the things :
the first step maybe be my monitor's problem .
1. use raspi-config
-> Advanced Options -> AA pi 4 vedio Output -> disable both 4kp60 and analog (choise the item and save , shutdown)

2. switch the physical hdmi connect to another (there two hdmi interface)

power on , play the wav , it's ok

I think it's a bug .

the latest raspbian os thers isn't the bug . the other dist , eg arch , manjaro , This problem still exists

I use Debian-Pi-Aarch64 https://github.com/openfans-community-o ... Pi-Aarch64 , it's really good if you are very Familiar with linux .

This fixed it for me. Must be the same bug. Thanks a lot!

I had the same problem and @dengfeng solution also fixed it (1000x thanks).
You have to disable the 4k in order to have sound on the jack (I hope it will be fixed on a future update of raspbian).

1) raspi-config
2) -> Advanced Options -> AA pi 4 video Output -> disable 4kp60
3) save
4) reboot

Thank you for the above advice, I had the same problem with my Pi 4 sound and after following the instructions it's working great now.

I had to select `raspi-config` -> `Advanced Options` -> `A4 Audio Force audio out through HDMI or 3.5mm jack`. Select `1 Headphones`.

I have a PI4 with latest Raspbian everything. I have Docker + Teslamate installed as well as Recoll (https://www.lesbonscomptes.com/recoll/).

I have no sound and the desktop UI says "No audio devices".
The PulseAudio volume control says "no output devices available" when I select Show: Hardware Output devices.

My symptoms are identical to dbeach in this thread: https://forum.manjaro.org/t/new-install ... g/46383/10

The only way I get any audio out is via:
aplay -D sysdefault:CARD=Headphones /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

VLC gives nothing and shows only the "Dummy Output" under Audio Device.

I'm trying to setup Rhasspy ... so the audio in/out is somewhat necessary :-)

Any help would be most appreciated.
I've ordered a couple more PI4's so I'll be able to test on a clean platform compared to the one I'm currently running.
