Finally got it working. I followed this web site:

These is still much to work out (DDNS, throughput etc) but it works! If I run into any other stumbling blocks I will post..

Ok works on IPhone but is not working through a double NAT. Need to resolve that first. I see that there is lots of information out there about double NAT issues so I am not anticipating any real problems, just more fiddly little problems.

The double NAT issue I thought I had was a problem with my Win7 - see this KB

My iphone works just great both via LTE and WIFI

I have not done any throughput testing but it certainly seems adequate so far (Windows RDC, SSH etc)

I am in the process of determining what VPN solution to go for and was leaning towards PPTPD despite the security concerns due to the ease of setup (i am not too concerned about someone actively hacking my VPN, the odds are pretty slim and i don't have any traffic worth the trouble for someone ). However since L2TP is apparently do-able I am now leaning towards this option. My main requirement is the ability of using the native VPN setup on the iPad so i can encrypt all traffic while traveling, and this solution appears to provide that.

I would be curious to know if were you using "Wheezy" Raspbian? Did you deviate from the tutorial you provided to accommodate the Pi in lieu of Ubuntu? And I would be interested in knowing how you set up DDNS? Thanks!
