Dual USB C Power Supply For Raspberry PI 4?

Tue Dec 03, 2019 10:49 pm

I am looking for a recommendation for a small power supply for my Raspberry PI 4 system. One with dual USB C ports. both my RPI4 system unit, and my monitor run on USB C power.

Any pointers or information greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

I have a similar question, but I'd need a power supply or hub that can power 5 x Raspberry Pi 4B.

Context: I'm using a 5-node cluster that I currently power using 5 original Raspberry Pi USB-C power adapters. I do demo's and workshop using multiple of these cluster (say 6 or 7). Carrying around 6 x 5 = 30 adapters isn't very practical. Let alone finding the mains plugs to plug them in...

One alternative is to use a 10 port Anker power hub combined with USB-C to micro-USB converters. Tried that and it works for my application (even though it not in spec as far as power rating is concerned).

connected to a PSU of your choice ... i.e. https://www.meanwell.com/webapp/product ... rod=SP-480

Use the trimmer to increase output voltage to 5.1xV ... 85A output current (note: example only! use whatever rating you need/are willing to pay for) will be good for more than 30 RPi4's ...

Thanks! Very useful.

It's probably a good idea to put some fuses between this super power supply and each RPi ;-)

I just recently bought a SmartiPi V2 touch screen case. It comes with two Y cables. One is Micro USB in to two Micro USB out. It for using a Pi 3 and the 7 inch touch screen on the one Pi 3 power supply. The other is USB C in and one USB C out, and one Micro USB out. For use witha Pi 4 power supply, Pi 4 and 7inch touch screen. Hunt around and you may find a USB C Y splitter cable. Assuming 3A is enough to drive your Pi and the display.

That's also assuming the display uses 5v, it might use 12v

Ah, good point. The OP said USB C input so I assumed ( maybe wrongly) it was 5V.

This power supply issue with the Raspberry PI 4 is a really sad state of affairs!

I have tried 3 different dual port power supplies with my PI4 system and NONE OF THEM WORK.

All of them work well to power my LED Monitor which takes USB C power, but I have to use a dedicated Canakit power supply for the PI4 that has only one output.

Why can’t the PI4 foundation offer an adapter which enables PI4’s to work with more USB power supplies?? They need to FiX the hardware...

For what its worth my Pi 4 works just fine with the Official Pi Foundation 3A USC C power supply, and the Official 2.5A Micro USB power supply. I am of the opinion that 3A is iffy though, if you have a few devices connected like displays etc that want thier power from the Pi's USB ports etc..
