Does this forum have a 'dark' mode ?

Fri Nov 29, 2019 2:57 pm

Hi all, just a simple Friday afternoon question - does this forum have a 'dark' mode option somewhere :?

Browsing on an android tablet and just too much white ....... :|

No.

You've got a choice of Prosilver or RPi themes. I prefer the RPi theme.

Yeah, prefer default RPI theme but just after all the black on white to be reversed .....

Most of the android world has gone 'dark' mode crazy apart from here, hopefully one day the forum will increase it's user friendliness and save our retinas ;)

Most browsers can be adjusted to use white-on-black though it's usually a 'for everything' setting. You could probably create a Tamper Monkey Script or similar for the browser to fiddle with the colour settings for just forum pages.

I remember when we went from white-on-black to “save our retinas”. It would be nice if UXs were designed for and by people with eyes older than in their twenties. None of this spindly single-pixel stem stuff.

I remember when a NASA study (?) said that yellow on blue were the best screen colours

Personally, I'd like to see a Lisa Frank mode here: neon rainbows, with sparkles. Life's too short for a world wrapped in grey.

If you are using windows you might try this (to see how it looks).
  1. Use the snipping tool to make a snip off the whole screen, (make sure its has some coloured parts too) copy to clipboard.
  2. Open Paint, and paste the snip. Select everything, right click and select invert colours.
  3. Watch the ugly result, and realise it's not a good idea, and it's not as easy as simply inverting the colours.
  4. Spare yourself the fruitless waiting for a feature that won't come.

The main reason I still use FIrefox is it's built in ability to easily customize colours.

Amber on black FTW!

This is how it would look if the forum inverted the colors (except the pictures in it obviously).

Dougie's userpic was the only part that was inverted twice, inverted once it was too horrible. LOL.

I think OP asked for visual dark mode of this forum ;-)
Sometimes it is quite dark even with shiny colours.

How do you use a special CSS file? Could you post it, or is it too long?

It depends on your browser's support for user style sheets. They may be different for different browsers. I'll publish the style sheet I use here tomorrow

I think I like gkreidl's style for the for the "dark theme"

as sometimes I feel that using the default theme (and the other), the monitor is too bright on a darkened room.

if the CSS style is made available I might give it a try as well. ;)
(hope it comes with instructions how to implement as I've zero CSS "programming" skills) :(

I found this user style at userstyles.org:
https://userstyles.org/styles/2187/myfa ... lor-scheme
There is an extension "Stylish" for Chromium/Chrome/Vivaldi (and I suppose also for Firefox), which allows installing and using userstyles. I have just tested this style with Vivaldi and it works.

In kweb it is different. Most of the global styles don't work with the webkit engine. But this one does. It can be activated from the utilities page or from the (address) input line:
&file:///usr/local/share/kweb/color.css
to switch it off, just enter "&" and hit "Return"
