PiHole, PiVPN, DNSCrypt and NAS on RPI

Mon Nov 25, 2019 11:50 am

i wanna buy a raspberry pi 3 or 4 and secure my home network on it by having
pihole to block ads
pivpn for secure surfing
DNSCrypt to encrypt my DNS
NAS for extra storage for all my devices or movies to watch from it
and if needed secure my wifi network
can i use this all on a single pi to secure my home network and have my network uncrackable for outsiders or friends when i use wifi

There is a lot of good discussion of doing the security stuff in the Pi-Hole forums, folks are doing it and it works well. The network speed of the Pi is a concern, more so on the 3 than the 4 but your VPN speed will be limited to what the Pi can support.

In a similar way NAS use is going to depend on your Pi's network speed and if you ask too much from it all connected services will suffer.

I did most of the security stuff (no VPN) on one Pi and the NAS on a second one. Neither is very hard on the CPU outside of a few CPU intensive operations. My NAS setup is happy with the 100 wired connection speed, it isn't fast but it gets the job done.
