TVHeadend won't record onto attached SSD Drive.

Wed Nov 13, 2019 10:08 am

Hello,

My Pi 4 recognises the 240 GB SSD drive fine and mounts it automatically to /media/pi/ef etc....

TV Headend records fine but places the recording on the sd card under /media/pi/Storage/Recordings

despite me having changed the default location for recordings as per the screenshots below. What am I missing?

Thanks in advance.

Mihailo, check that you have rw permissions at: /media/pi/efd****

Code: Select all

ls -al /media/pi
comments >/dev/null ;-)

Thought it might come to that. Thanks, will check.

No luck, I've run chmod 777 against the directory /media/pi/ef*** but it's still putting recordings in /media/pi/Storage/Recordings?

Any ideas?

I've recently tried with /mnt/nfs , this is NFS (network) share and recording (T2, HEVC) went OK.

Maybe it is 4b USB issue, do you have something in logs:

Code: Select all

sudo dmesg -T
I had problem with SSD connecting-reconnecting to OS.
comments >/dev/null ;-)

No problems here with the usb hard drive manually mounted in /mnt/ via fstab on my Pi4.

Have you tried creating a ‘recordings’ folder in your hard drive and pointing TVHeadend towards that rather than the root of the hard drive ?

Are you using an up-to-date version of TVHeadend?

Remember to assign correct permissions to the folder.

Still no luck. Am using HTS Tvheadend 4.2.8-34~g24a2f59e9 and have run chmod 777 against the Storage/Recordings directory I have created for myself under /media/pi/ef*****/Storage/Recordings. Tried to record something via LibreElec and it still goes on the SD card.

Does TVheadend have another setting somewhere which sets the recording location? :|

For the record I can create files on the SSD under the Recordings directory no problem. Also did a DMESG and no issues with the SSD appeared.

Odd if permissions are all set correctly.

Could try updating to 4.2.8.36 to see if it helps https://cloud.disroot.org/s/y3YtbkrgFodCwdH

Or try the ‘unstable’ 4.3 build (I been running it without any issues).

What file system is your ssd?
In my experience tvheadend prefers recording to linux formatted, ext4 drives rather than ntfs or fat.
Changing it solved similar prolem in past

Using mounting via fstab, try:

Code: Select all

sudo chown pi /mnt/mountpoint
replace /mnt/mountpoint with your actual mount directory.

Then remount

Code: Select all

sudo mount -a
Headless PI. OMG, someone cut it's head off. Oh, hang on. it didn't have one to start with.

Sigh....beginning to lose faith here.

Have upgraded tvheadend to 4.2.8.36 unfortunately no difference. (Where can I get the 4.3 file?)

Have manually unmounted and remounted my ssd drive to /media/pi/newmount instead of the default, also no difference.

File system on the SSD is ext4.

Not sure what to try next?

Maybe silly idea, why not try with ext4 formatted ordinary USB stick with proper rwx permissions ?
Just like proof of concept ?

Did you save (or click apply) in tvheadend interface after adding the new recordings destination?
Does this match exactly the mount point name?
Can you mount the ssd to a simple, short folder name and see if that works? The ef*** folder name length and hyphens may be throwing it. Then set permissions.

I think I've resolved this and it did boil down to permissions in the end.

First of all a big thanks to everyone that has helped, much appreciated! Roken, cob, diogen151, snowballEarth.

So I read on the tvheadend forum that ALL directories need the right permissions not just the final target ef*** directory. So I changed them for /media and then for /pi too. Tested on tvheadend by recording something and it put it on the SSD drive, under ef***. :D

Will test from LibreElec later....

Spoke to soon!!!!

Recording directly from tvheadend is fine it puts the recording on the SSD drive.

Recording from LibreElec still stubbornly puts it on the SD card.

Also have another issue in that I get PVR is starting...0% in LibreElec, quite serious errors in the Kodi log:

If I were feeling lazy, I'd symlink over the location. So...

Code: Select all

ln -s /media/pi/ef... /media/pi/Storage/Recordings
Remember: repoint the recording path in the tvheadend interface though

Did you create a tvheadend user? Has this been configured in libreelec? Is this the same user as the user you're logging into tvheadend:9981 as?

I just mounted my external SSD in the location that tvheadend was using. Simples :)

My problems have gone beyond the original one of LibreElec not recording onto the SSD drive.

LibreElec now no longer has any TVHeadend add-ons, they've all disappeared!

Have also logged a query on the LibreElec forum to see if anyone can help.

One problem after another.......and all I wanted to do was to save myself buying a new PVR recorder. Looks like I might have to do that after all.

So upgraded to LibreElec 9.2 and add-ons have returned.

The saga continues! :D

I now get error 403:Forbidden when trying to access Tvheadend from a browser. This is the output from systemctl status tvheadend:

Hi

About the recording path, somebody mentioned linking it from the default . It is a good idea to do this anyway, so that in the future, if you change the disk, you can just re-create the link instead of having to alter the TVH/Libelec configuration. A new disk will likely mount itself under /media/<user name>/<disk-label> or similar. Or you could hard wire it in /etc/fstab. Creating the link gets round all of that.

Thanks Jim, I've given up with LibreElec and a Pi4. Am now trying OSMC and a Pi3. There is a blog here where someone has got it to work:
