Skype on Pi

Thu Dec 13, 2012 4:56 pm

Hi all I am a bit of a noob when it comes to the Pi

I work in Maplin and all of the staff are raving about these little machines as they can do ANYTHING you want them to apparently :P

Anyway I have been reading up and I realise that getting android on them is a little bit of a problem at the moment so I have been advised by the staff in work to run XBMC on one as I want to use it as an equivalent to smart tv.

My question is ...... Is there an addon for xbmc for skype or is there another way to get a full blown program of skype on the Pi ?

I dont own one yet but hopefully I will be getting the 512mb for christmas !

Thanks in advance people

I don't accept the whole "Pi can do ANYTHING" nonsense it's just a really cheap ARM computer with some neat tricks it's not going to blow you away when compared to a netbook or desktop PC.
It's certainly useful as a cheap low powered Media Centre or for running 24/7 home based web / file servers.

As for Skype it's worth noting there's no microphone input, furthermore there isn't an official or unofficial port of Skype either.
I heard someone manage to compile Skype for Raspbian Wheezy but it was text only so no video or audio communications.
You may have better luck when Android gets an official PI port but that won't happen until Broadcom have finished their Openmax drivers.

Brilliant

Thanks for the info

Would a webcam with a built in mic through USB work ??

Also is it worth not buying one yet and waiting for the Android update ??

Thanks

If you only want to buy the Pi with Android , i would suggest
to buy a Android TV Stick instead. Android is not high priority for
the foundation , because the Pi is designed as educational device.
