can i plug old monitor's built-in speakers into the pi3?

i read the old posts about the audio port of the pi3 not working with pc speakers due to insufficient power, but what about old monitors with built in speakers which draws power from monitor's power supply? will the pi3 be able to output audio if its connected to the built-in speakers that way?

(i haven't bought the monitor with built-in speakers yet so i can't test it out for myself)

Yes. The monitor audio input should be line level, which the Pi can drive without a problem.

I don't know where you read that, but it's not the case. In general, "PC speakers" are self-powered and that's exactly what one is looking for in speakers for a Pi.

Some of the smaller and cheaper speakers are not powered. I've used some that relied on the PC to provide a speaker level output, not line level.

yeah from looking at images of the monitor that seems to be the case, the speakers are definitely self-powered internally.

someone was trying to use pc speakers with the pi3, but it doesn't work because the pi will only give enough output for earphones or something.

The OP in that thread said "ordinary speakers" (implying to most people here, bare speakers with no built-in amp) rather than "PC speakers" that are self powered. The rest of that thread goes into those issues.
