Poor WiFi signal with Raspeberry Zero W

Sat Sep 14, 2019 8:05 am

I have recently bought Rasberry Zero W. Since I wanted to get original top quality item I bought it at PiHut.

Nevertheless, I still have problems with the unit; as it has incredibly poor WiFi signal. When about 2 m from the AP (one wall in between), signal is only -72dBm to -82dBm depending on the unit orientation, as checked by iwconfig command.

I have tried two different SDcards, two different power supplies, without significant change. I also put my Raspberry Pi 3 on the same spot and I got signal -56dBm (I haven't tried different orientations, just for comparison).

Is such small signal normal for Raspberry Zero W? Should I perhaps asked for a replacement?

Is the Zero W in any kind of case? Metallic cases may interfere with wireless.

No metallic or any other case, of course. I am well familiar with the concept of Faraday cage.

What does the signal level look like if you measure it on your smartphone e.g. using the free WifI Analyzer for Android, with the phone near the pi? On mine I get -33dBm on the phone, -37dBm on the pi and both are 2m from the router, no walls between.

With smartphone Galaxy S10e I get around -45dB

So to summarize:
- smartphone -45dB
- Raspberry Pi 3: -55dB
- Raspberry Pi Zero W: -75dB
