I have just started to play with a PI4.
However, 1st issue is it gets very hot and then slows down even out of the case.
The suggested ways of sorting this are:
1) Get the Pimoroni FAN-SHIM - in principle a great idea, However, it lifts the GPIO header extender at one end by ~ 1 mm. This means that the plastic stand-off pilars are nolonger long enough so either the Sense Hat board is under strain or the lower ends of the pillars just float! Not much point in fiting them then!
2) Get the Pimoroni Aluminium heatsink case. - It cools it down somewhat but the whole thing still gets uncomfortably warm. However, the Sense Hat would short out on the heatsink case!
Furthermore, If I attempt to use a ribbon cable to extend the GPIO then as the 2x20 pin ribbon cable mounting headers are wider than the gap in the top of the heatsink case thus preventing the ribbon cable from being plugged in. My first thought was to look to mill out some of the Aluminium on the top of the case. However, if I were to do this then there would be insufficient material left for the threads to hold the case screws!
If only the PI 4 PCB had been layed out with the mounting holes 2 mm further apart along the long edge then this would not be an issue!
Physical dimensions for the system seem to leave something to be desired!
Without the FAN-Shim if the screws are used then the PI4 nolonger fits inside the official case, the screws foul on the locating posts. Consequently all the cut outs for the connectors: USB-C, HDMI, AV nolonger line up.
Does anybody know of an available case that will:
Take Pi 4
Fix the overheating problem
Allow sufficient space to add a HAT to the Pi and provide a clear case lid so that one can see any displays / leds
Have a slot to allow for a ribbon cable to exit to extend the GPIO pins out to a breadboard.
Support mounting screws to attach the standoff pillars holding HATs
Thanks
