Gigabit Switch for Pi 4

As described in this post, see also here, my Pi 4B will not connect to a Rosewill RC-416 8-port Gigabit Green Switch.

Nobody has suggested a solution nor have I found one myself. Therefore, I'm considering the following two options:

• Get a different switch.
• Get a different pi-like SBC.

There is no point in trying to discuss the second option on this forum.

With regards to a different switch, does anyone know whether the TP-LINK TL-SG108 Unmanaged 10/100/1000Mbps 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch described here works with the Pi 4B?

Could anyone recommend an 8-port switch known to work with the 4B?

I got that TPLink switch off Amazon 2 weeks ago. I have 2 4Bs and my router connected to it and it seems to be working fine.
Haven't done any in-depth tests though

I've tried four different cables, all of which work to connect the same switch at gigabit speeds to other computers. I suppose there could be a mechanical irregularity in the RJ45 socket that prevents all the wires from connecting.

For now I placed an older 100 Mbit switch between the 4B and the gigabit switch, which works but at the lower speed.

That's good to know. Unless something turns up to fix the compatibility problems with the switch I have, I'll likely get one. It's interesting that the Tenda and the TP-LINK both have the same SG108 model number.

Could the Pi be broken?

I've used a D-LInk G0-SW-8G with a RPi4B.

That's another good data point. I'm starting to suspect the Pi 4B itself is the problem rather than the Rosewill switch. I'll have more information soon.

Netgear GS108 switch here with a cheap 3m/10ft cable from Poundworld (before they closed down here). Runs fine at 1Gb on my Pi 4B/4GB

I have a Netgear GS116 & GS308 and my pi4 works with both of them , using various networking cables, most of which I have made myself, lengths vary from 6" to 20ft , the longer being a hard wired LAN socket in another room.

started setting up RPi4B-4G yesterday...with a freshly installed Raspbian Buster with full Desktop.... connected properly to the GbE switch....
but not with Raspbian Stretch updated to Buster (cloned and updated/upgraded on RPi3B+, then microSD transferred to RPi4B, no LAN & no WiFi problem)

I have now tried that 4B which was not connecting to the Rosewill RC-416 on a different gigabit switch. It connects to a D-Link DGS-1248T no problems and I have verified gigabit speeds using iperf3. Hurray!

I'm actually a bit surprised: The RC-416 worked with all other computers I've tried and the 4B seems to work with all other switches. I wonder what the incompatibility is and whether there are other switches with similar problems. For now, I'm looking to get a different switch. Thanks for all the recommendations of gigabit switches that do work with the Raspberry Pi 4B--that will be useful to avoid any further problems!

Woohoo! The TP-LINK TL-SG108 Unmanaged 10/100/1000Mbps 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch is now on order. If all goes well, I'll be back to my file-server experiment soon.

I have now tried the TP-LINK TL-SG108. Reported speeds with iperf3 are around 930 Mbits/sec, which seems quite promising. It's still a mystery to me what the incompatibility was with the Rosewill RC-416, because that switch has worked fine with every other computer.

At any rate, I was able to get the new switch at what I feel was a reasonable price and the performance seems good. Again thanks to everyone for mentioning which switches work.
