You should not startx as the root user, start it as a normal user (i.e. without sudo).

Assuming you are not running a Lite version of the Raspbian Operating System, on which this will not be supported, you could run the raspi-config utility and enable booting to the Desktop on a trial basis to check that your installation and display are fully functional.

After telling raspi-config to boot into desktop mode, the pi still boots into command line mode. I have recently installed the waveshare driver for a touchscreen I bought, which I suspect is causing my problems. This has been a problem since I entered the command:

Code: Select all

./LCD35-show

Maybe update your system (you're running a 2+ year old image that may not work with newer Raspberry Pis), then use raspi-config (that is one you need to do sudo raspi-config with) to enable startup straight to desktop. This won't work if you're running Raspbian Lite, as it doesn't include X.

I recently performed a full update from Wheezy to Jessie and my pi is a Raspberry Pi B. Is there any way I can check if I'm running the lite version?

Since your original installation is now over 4 years old and you can't remember what you installed I really think the most reliable way forward is to reinstall (perhaps on a fresh/spare microSD card) using the current supported Raspbian Buster Operating System.

(Although perhaps you should check with the supplier of your third-party display that their product is supported by this current OS.)

Thanks, B.Goode, that sounds like the best option for me now.
