Unable to transfer files over SFTP

Wed Aug 14, 2019 2:57 pm

Pi 3B+ running Raspbian Stretch on a SanDisk 16GB Class 10 SDCard, over 9 gigs are free and available.

I tried copying over a .zip file weighing around 5 GB from my Windows PC to the RPi using WinSCP, and usually when it reaches the 700 MB mark, it fails with this error:

Code: Select all

Network error: Software caused connection abort

Copying files to remote side failed
Googled the error, most people who had the same error actually didn't have SSH enabled, but one thread I came across suggested removing the package, so I removed the openssh package, installed it again, reboted, this time the transfer got to around 1.2 GB in, and it failed again with the same error.

Tried transferring the file through VNC File transfer, significantly slower, but still fails less than halfway.

Its too little information to actually theorize much about the reasons.. are you really using SFTP insteaad of SCP ?

I could suggest that you use the commandline tool "pscp" from the people that make "putty". https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgt ... atest.html

FWIW, you may find FileZilla (available for both Linux and Windows) more reliable for SFTP (unless you don't want a GUI-based program). I've been using it since my "first Pi" (and, IIRC, before that on other Linux/Windows devices) without issues. (It's the tool I upload my MoinMoin exported webpages from my P2B to my website as well).
Trev.
Still running Raspbian Jessie on some older Pi's (an A, B1, B2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W) but Stretch on my 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, A+ and a B2. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

When transferring through through WinSCP, the 'SFTP' protocol is already set by default.

I used the PSCP that comes with PuTTY as you suggested, same error:

Just downloaded it. Transfer is up to 23%, so far so good.

Will report back in case this fails as well.

Thanks Trevor.

EDIT: So the transfer seems to have been successful, but it failed multiple times during the transfer, according to the log, which can be seen here:

What type of network connection do you have (WiFi, Wired, mixed) and, if via a router, make, model etc. might be informative. Those errors look more like "general network issues" to me rather than being Pi/SSH specific. FillaZilla is good at "recovering" connections - often necessary when transferring to/from a remote system via the internet cf. a local LAN which, ideally, should not suffer such breaks often except, perhaps, where there are a large number of devices connected to one router. (In our current household the number of connections to the router can be 10+, but they're mixed wired and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi. The previous house had an extensive, room-to-room, wired network installed by me, prior to WiFi devices becoming cheaply available - that easily supported ~double the connections currently in use here.)

I've got two Netgear R7800s. One is upstairs (Access Point) that I was connected to via 5 GHz WiFi, the other R7800 is the main router, downstairs, that's connected directly to the RPi with a Cat5e Ethernet cable.

Usually about 15 devices connected at one time which is no problem for the R7800s.

I'll try running the transfer again while connected to the main router rather than the AP to try and rule that out as a problem.

Return to “Raspbian”
