XBMC + media server

Thu Dec 06, 2012 10:08 pm

Hi,
Sorry if my search didn't get the answers I was looking for, but there are so many options I wasn't sure what to choose so thought I'd ask instead.

Currently I have a simple home setup - windows 8 PC serving an external USB drive to a couple of XBMC setups (an OpenElec and a AppleTV)

Naturally I'd firstly like to reduce the elec bill by not having the PC on all the time so would like a simple (I never got on with Linux!) media server - in fact a simple file server would do.

The second box would run XBMC - I'm thinking OpenElec if its snappy enough, possibly with Wifi.

Now, I'm very new to this having just heard about it so would be wondering what to get to power it, which USB wifi dongle etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

Check here for the peripherals: http://elinux.org/RPi_VerifiedPeripherals

Check out Squeezeplug for servers - search here.

Brilliant, thank you, I'd not heard of squeezeplug.
