Raspberry Pi 4 B will not connect to 2.4Ghz wifi

Sat Jul 27, 2019 12:49 am

I am replacing a Raspberry Pi 3 B+

Installation of the OS etc went fine on the Pi 4B - all except wifi.
Wifi will connect to the 5 Ghz but not the 2.4 Ghz.
I have no problem with the Pi 3 B+ connecting to either 2.4 or 5.

When I try to connect Pi 4 B to 2.4Ghz it doesn't give an error just doesn't ever connect.

All equipment is in the same room. All equipment has been rebooted.

I updated and upgraded everything on the Pi 4B.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Drew

(I have tried everything I can think of - all router settings, wpa_supplicant.config settings, the Pi 3 B+ works fine on both 2.4 and 5 but the Pi 4 B will not connect to my 2.4 only 5Ghz SSIDs are different ???) :cry:

(iphone picture of the raspberry pi 4 b network drop down - it connects to Network241_5G but not Network241 (which is 2.4Ghz))

If you are using your phone hotspot, did you turn on your allow all devices to connect option, not the only allowed devices can connect option? That might be why your 3 B+ works and not your 4. Otherwise, I have no clue :?

Can you post (in code tags) you wpa_supplicant.conf file

Please only hide the password (use xxxxx or similar) - be careful not to change anything else on that line.

I am using an Asus RT-AC88U router.

Thank you for helping.

wpa_supplicant.conf:

ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1
country=US

network={
ssid="Network241"
psk="********"
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
disabled=1
}

network={
ssid="Network241_5G"
psk="********"
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
}

network={
ssid="DadsiPhoneSE"
psk="********"
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
disabled=1
}

Not sure if this will help but you could take out the ‘disabled=1’ and add a

Code: Select all

priority=1
to the least important network, the priority=2 to the next etc.

The disabled should still allow you to select it but I wonder if you have found a quirk?

You could also check /var/log/wpa_supplicant.log to see if anything is reported

I know Netgear had a really odd quirk in that if you had the guest network on you had to switch it off then on before you could connect to the private one (after each power cycle of the router...)

You could try taking out the key management lines.

Are you very far from the router or have lots of 2.4Ghz networks around you? Also microwaves / DECT phones can impact this...

Also do not have an Ethernet cable in at the same time.

There is an Ethernet cable attached. I have tried it with and without the ethernet cable.
I am replacing a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ that connects to either 2.4 or 5 ghz on the same modem. the pi is in the same room with the router - signal is strong. I'll take a look at the log. thanks. I'm thinking it's a bad radio in the pi ?

Unlikely given the 5Ghz works.

There have been some odd reports about dhcpd turning WiFi off when the Ethernet cable is connected but I cannot find them using the search today :oops:

You can run wpa supplicant by hand to see if you get any other messages.

Latest test:

Plugged in the Raspberry Pi 3 B+
Everything worked perfectly
Connects to 2.5Ghz
Connects to 5Ghz
Connects to Ethernet
Can switch back and forth between all connections perfectly

wpa_supplicant.conf

ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1
country=US

network={
ssid="Network241"
psk="********"
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
}

network={
ssid="Network241_5G"
psk="********"
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
}

Note: It does not list the ethernet?
So, I disconnected the wifi on the 3b+ and it still does not list the ethernet
in the wpa_supplicant.conf :idea:
SO, I will use this wpa_supplicant.conf in the 4B (I wish I had tried this B4 :) )

No reason why it should...

wpa_supplicant is a component used in wireless networks.

It is not relevant to a cabled Ethernet connection. At any rate, not in a domestic environment - possibly in a tightly managed 'institutional' network.

So, after hours of investigating deeply into the Pi and my router:

The Raspberry Pi 4B 2.4Ghz will not connect to my network.

Yet, my Pi 3 B+ connects to everything ethernet, 2.4ghz, & 5ghz.
I doesn't make a difference if the ethernet is connected.
I can switch back and forth no problem at all.

I can only conclude that even though it may seem odd
the 2.4Ghz part of the radio does not function.

I guess I'll try to return it and go back to the 3 B+.

Same thing. Pi 4B will NOT connect to 2.4Ghz wifi.
but does connect to 5ghz. :(

Pi 3 B+ works great!

Perhaps this is the source of my problems as well. Just got an RPI4 and getting horrendously slow throughput on Wifi, unusable for web browsing.

Possibly because the 5Ghz band has less range, and it won’t connect to the 2.4 Ghz band. Would be very interested as to why this is the case.

Are you (all) aware of this thread: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... 0#p1574919
(No-one has stated whether they have a display in use or not). Also, w.r.t. to (router) channel optimisation (and "competition from the neighbours") I've found the "WiFi Analyzer" 'phone/tablet App** useful for setting up a router to avoid overlapping channels (assuming you have admin rights for the router of course).

You need to specify the frequencies the wifi adapter is allowed to connect to.

So in your wpa_supplicant.conf you add for 2.4GHz only:

Code: Select all

freq_list=2412 2417 2422 2427 2432 2437 2442 2447 2452 2457 2462 2467 2472
Do this below the first lines and before the

Code: Select all

network={
statements

======================
and vice versa for only 5GHz

Code: Select all

freq_list=5170 5180 5190 5200 5210 5220 5230 5240 5260 5280 5300 5320 5500 5520 5540 5560 5580 5600 5620 5640 5660 5680 5700

What is the status of this issue?
Adding the freq_list does not fix the issue.

Hi I'm having same problems with raspberry pi 4B module while connecting to 2.4g WiFi router. In the GUI WiFi network is visible but can't connect to the WiFi. I tried above solution in wpa_supplicant. Yet it is not connecting. Other than that I followed below solutions.
1.editing wpa_supplicant to add SSID and Password. - didn't work
2.reducing screen resolution to a lower value 1280x720(I found some users found problems while connecting to WiFi with high resolutions) - didn't work
I'm new to pi and any guess on the issue. Thanks.

yea, there is an ongoing issue with interference. Best solution is a wifi dongle, they are about $10 on amazon. yea its a shame. probably why other pi iot makers opted out of adding wifi to their boards. 5G still holds up pretty good.
