Moving an image file...

Sun Jul 14, 2019 4:57 am

I right click on an image file, copy it, then go to other folder and right click, paste it, and i get 'Permission denied'.

I keep getting permission denieds on lots of files that i simply want to move from one folder to another.

How do i fix this? What's wrong? Help please.
Honestly, i've no idea what i'm doing.

What is the full path of the folder that you want to move from and to?

Anything outside of your home directory needs elevated permissions. Just keep your pictures in the /home/pi/pictures folder (or learn how to copy things from the CLI with sudo).
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?

If you are running a standard version of the Raspbian Operating System, the default pi user does not have write permission for that target.

Code: Select all

[email protected]:~ $ ls -ald /usr/share/rpd-wallpaper/
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Apr 18 2018 /usr/share/rpd-wallpaper/
[email protected]:~ $ touch /usr/share/rpd-wallpaper/some_image
touch: cannot touch '/usr/share/rpd-wallpaper/some_image': Permission denied
[email protected]:~ $ sudo touch /usr/share/rpd-wallpaper/some_image
[email protected]:~ $ ls -al /usr/share/rpd-wallpaper/some*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Jul 14 08:21 /usr/share/rpd-wallpaper/some_image
[email protected]:~ $

Use the following command to see the permissions, link count, owner name, size, modified date, file/directory name:

ls -acgh /usr/share/rpd-wallpaper

You should see that all the files are owned by "root" and non-root users only have "read" permission. You might want to study how linux uses users, groups, and sets permissions. You should also review the "sudo" command and be aware this command should be carefully used or one can make there system very difficult to use by non-root users.
